I am not sure about the actual retail price for 4HP20 but the last time I heard, it was between rm120 to rm150 per liter. Normally, an ATF change will require between 4 to 5 liters refill and you should change the strainer + oil pan gasket.
For an E36, 10 years + cars, it is best to change 3 oil seals at the top coverter, gear shifter and transmission rear shaft + 2 oil rings for pipes linking the GB to the radiator as you do not want to waste the new and expensive ATF to leakages cause by worn out oil seals.
Further consideration.
1) In order to remove the top coverter oil seal, the gearbox needs to be detached from the engine.
2) Since you already remove the gearbox, it is also better to change the engine flywheel oil seal too coz you do not want to do a job twice. If this seal leaks in the future, you would have to detach the GB again. So why incure the same labor cost twice. Note, these seals are not expensive but labor cost is higher since the mechanic will have to detach the exhaust, covers and long shafts before they can detach GB.
3) Since GB has been detached, the ATF in your GB and the top converter will be almost totally removed. Thus, you will need to fill in about 8 to 10 liters of new 4HP20 ATF.
The overal cost I believe should be between rm1.5k to slightly above 2k. The major factor is how much you are being charged for the 4HP20 and labor.
It does not end there. When your GB is removed, you should inspect and change damage shaft rubber bushing, shaft rubber coupling, gear box rubber mounting and shaft center bushing. These are extras of course.
After all work and cost, the result will be... money well spent for sheer driving pleasure. Hope the explanation helps.
