Hi sifu, My 328i 20K KM ago refurbish d auto gear box. Now facing problem delay on changing gear. When it manage to change it will produce very loud "klock" sound from back! when in to workshop to check and result show auto gearbox all clear without fault code. :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: Is anyone of you experience this problem?

Had my gearbox rebuild 1 & 1/2 years ago, never had that sound after the rebuild. When does the "klock" happen, when you floor it or normal drive?

Izzit the 'klock' sound heard when the gear change from gear 1 to gear 2 or 2 to 3?

do you know which gear oil they fill into your GB??? if ATF not follow the GB spec, it will cause this problem. For example, GB spec ask used 4HP20....but as alternative, can use dextron III (cheap) but need to change every 20k compare with 4HP20 that can used until 60k to 80k km.

Not sure what atf my mach use. By the way, I in damansara area can recommend which workshop is genuine and honest. I need to try new workshop for a change.

This could explain it. Time to change your ATF. Anyone know how much is to change the ATF, filter, etc?

I am not sure about the actual retail price for 4HP20 but the last time I heard, it was between rm120 to rm150 per liter. Normally, an ATF change will require between 4 to 5 liters refill and you should change the strainer + oil pan gasket.

For an E36, 10 years + cars, it is best to change 3 oil seals at the top coverter, gear shifter and transmission rear shaft + 2 oil rings for pipes linking the GB to the radiator as you do not want to waste the new and expensive ATF to leakages cause by worn out oil seals.

Further consideration.

1) In order to remove the top coverter oil seal, the gearbox needs to be detached from the engine.

2) Since you already remove the gearbox, it is also better to change the engine flywheel oil seal too coz you do not want to do a job twice. If this seal leaks in the future, you would have to detach the GB again. So why incure the same labor cost twice. Note, these seals are not expensive but labor cost is higher since the mechanic will have to detach the exhaust, covers and long shafts before they can detach GB.

3) Since GB has been detached, the ATF in your GB and the top converter will be almost totally removed. Thus, you will need to fill in about 8 to 10 liters of new 4HP20 ATF.

The overal cost I believe should be between rm1.5k to slightly above 2k. The major factor is how much you are being charged for the 4HP20 and labor.

It does not end there. When your GB is removed, you should inspect and change damage shaft rubber bushing, shaft rubber coupling, gear box rubber mounting and shaft center bushing. These are extras of course.

After all work and cost, the result will be... money well spent for sheer driving pleasure. Hope the explanation helps.
