Hi Guys Just wondering what intervals one should change their front dics brakes..had mine already skimmed once by a Dunlop tyre specialist shop..[not really convinced the job was 100% remedial]. They are beginning to judder when I brake..the vibration can't all be the ABS kicking in can it?is it wise to have them skimmed again or should I change them for new ones..they already have abt 40k km use on them since the skim job. would appreciate if you could advise pls recommend a mechanic that can do a decent job here [also one easy on the pocket ..haha] many thanks! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Skimming your rotor will only solve the problem for a while. The best is change to a new original rotors or get the DBA gold.

well........it would help if you could state the model of yr ride.disc brakes do not actually have a replacement interval as such.it depends on usage.i have never done skimming on mine yet...been 6 years oledi :D

there is a minimum thickness limit stamped on all discs.

TQ for info moots..didnt know abt the min thickness info on discs..cripes got to remove the tyres and look now..sigh!

done a lot of high speed braking..must have worn out due to that :D :D :D

Et5,

Dunno what ride you have but for E30, min thickness are :

Front : 21mm ( though I recall seeing 20.8mm on disc )
Rear : 9mm.

When new, they are 22 & 10mm respectively.

Skimming can be arranged by any competent car mechanic.....at my mechanic place, there's one guy who comes aroound on his bike and his skimming machine on the back of it! simple & easy.

if i were you i would go for new rotors, they are around Rm110 per piece (for e30), i have a mircometer which can measure thicknesses up to 25mm, i can lend it to you if you want, just come for one of the tt

The juddering could be worn suspension parts ie. control arm bush, ball joints etc. A warped disc could also cause the judder, in which case, skimming won't help.

The ABS wouldn't judder. During extreme braking, you should feel a gentle tapping at the pedal, not juddering.

Thks Jules, Skar and Koryong
Yup better play safe and get the entire front looked at cheers guys!

Hi Supergrippen

Wonder if ordering them off the net be cheaper instead of getting them off the local importers? Perhaps US sites bec of fixed US$ to RM rate?

have you tried that?

;)

The shipping cost is as much as the disc. Check out eBay - the discs are auctioned at about US$200 for all 4, but the shipping is at least 100-150. That's easily RM1200 in total - might as well buy here.

I got these Schumann's (picyure) for my e36 about half year ago, for RM200 a piece new ..... damn cheap .. :yahoo: .... so far so good.

got mine skimmed once.

didn't last long. also started juddering soon after, and the braking distance worsened.

changed it after that.

skimping by skimming is a risk not worth taking...
