Flywheel sensor give way..........

My ride : E46 318i N46B20 year 2004Just wanna to share my recent encounter.on one great weekend evening, took my car out, out of a sudden, i heard strange beep and the next thing i knew, the whole car just switched off, and manage to pull to the road side. car cannot start gear lights on and i think most of the indicator lights was on.Cant do anything, call tow truck and sent to the mechanic.After dignosed, it was the flywheel sensor, changed and everything back to normal.This is like a anytime time bom, very dangerous. Strike you without any warning.anyone out there experience something similar?How often do we change this flywheel sensor?

Hw much does it costs you to change the flywheel sensor...? Could it detected early by any diagnostic...? My ride having problem with the flywheel gasket. Start to leak ready. FYI, mine ride is E46 318i N42 year 2003.
