I've not changed the wiper blades before, but I noticed the E46 ones has a "spoiler" attached to the wiper blade..
where can we get the exact same ones? does the bosch ones comes with it?

Bosch does make the original BMW framed ones with the spoiler.

If you refer my earlier posting, the Bosch Icon frameless wiper blades as in integrated spolier along teh full length of the blade. So no issue about teh spolier.

But Duratec is the normal framed design.
the beauty of it is , you use your old frames... just change the blades.. so much cheaper immediately and also long term...(on my old honda,it's been there 8 years already!!) they'll do it for you for free... with guarantee n warranty.. so much confidence in their products..
Jarance, those polarising effect is most probably also due to using windscreen cleaning solvents ..especially with some solvents(not all) that were used to rid of watermarks.. they tend to have that effect.. when u get a new screen, just use newspapers.. the ink and chemical of the paper is good enough.. from the way of the polarisation seen , u can see swirl effect.. if due to wipers, it will just be linear...

Yes, I do have to agree with you that the polarising effect was quite visual after using the cleaning solvent to get rid of the watermarks.

Newpaper is a good way of cleaning thing. Have used for years. The bleach which is used to make the paper to look white is a good solvent to clean the windscreen.

I wanted the frameless design and I make it a point to change my wiper often cos I reduce my already fast speed only slightly during rain. I am not looking at saving money but more about ensuring that they stay optimum all the time.

I just got the PIAA Super Silicone Wiper Blades which are made of silicone rubber, has greater visibility as it coats the windshield with silicone which i guess allows water beading and also reduces drag and the annoying chattering. Great in heavy rain.

So far so good...actually damn good. Costs about RM110 per blade. No regrets...so far.. anyone had any contrary experience on this..if so, I would wanna consider grilling them..hahaha

A bit off topic but may I clarify what is the function of the "spoiler" on the wiperblades, which some of you mentioned in your earlier posts?

It is a small inverse aerofoil shaped flap placed in front of the wiper blade. Aerodynamic pressure on the aerofoil will be transferred as downwards pressure pressing the blade harder against the screen especially at high forward speeds. This ensure better contact between the blade and the screen and thus better wipe and prevents lift-off.

They vary in size. In the case of the E46, it is about 12x3". In some cases, the spolier is attached to the arm whilst in most cars, they are attached to wiper blade frame. In both cases, it swings with the blade. Those where the spoiler is attached to the frame, the set comes with the blade, frame and spoiler e.g. E46. In most cars, only the driver side wiper has the spoiler. See the illustration - Spoilered Wiper Blade attached.

In the frameless design, the spolier is integrated all along the wiper blade as a countoyred shape. The prevents the need for separate spoiler and also offers even contact pressure all along the wiper blade. In the case of the normal spiloer, most of the downward pressure is concentrated on the spolier region. See Illustration - Frameless Wiper blade attahced.

Caveat - I am not a wiper blade salesman.

Its all about streamlining = better drag coefficient, reducing wind noise, visual cosmetics [? some might agree], etc etc etc...

Not wishing to enter into an argument with you, but as a very experienced professional aircraft engineer, I can with great certainty say that the spoiler on the wiper blade has little to do with improving streamlining or affecting drag coefficeint or reducing noise. I think the terms are used too loosely n this case.

There are devices that improves drag coefficient or streamlining but increases lift the opposite to down force. These are called wings and in some cases flaps and slats

There are other devices that are meant to destroy lift but does not create down force. these are called lift dumper or spoliers on aircraft.

But the spoiler on the wiper is about creating downforce much like the spoliers at the back of the race cars.

Technically, drag coefficient and streamlining does necesarily have real relationship with lift or downforce. They are about measurement of drag.

On the cosmetic front, I agree with you totally and that's why I want it.

Bro,

Since no one posted where these can be found and there are several perosns asking, would you like to tell us where you got yours.

thanks

Bro Saat try PIAA vera i just installed it on my LR works well or you can try Trico teflon blades heard they work pretty good too.

You can try some refills which has multi edge profiles. I find them very good in cleaning your windscreen but not so good in heavy rain.

Thanks guys for the explanation. Very informative. Never knew an item as simple and frequently taken for granted (in most cases) as the WIPERS have gained so much engineering attention to make it more efficient, with the downforce and all. Cool...

yep... my sentiment's exactly that... for me performance matters more than looks.. well , to a certain extent looks do matter... but for me lah, wiper looks don't matter much as compared to it's performance.. I have had mine on for.. god knows i cant recall .. but as i said before, "with no degradation in performance at all" .. so , I am confident I can always count on it ANYtime its use is warranted... there's NO "Alamak!Lupa mau tukar wiper lagiiii :) " so.. if optimum is what you are looking for with no headache of remembering to change it, so far I haven't found any other that come close with the same period of usage..Optimum ALL the time always.. and furthermore BOSCH doesnt want to give warranty..hmmmm or any other for that matter...

Jason you could try PIAA they do have it.

Did sumore research. In the US the frameless ones are called Icon or Evolution but in UK and Malaysia they called Aerotwin. The Icon has a more pronouced spoiler whilst the Evolution has a more generic spoiler design that works both ways..

Saat try checking out Trico they have two designs which are bracketless and comes with teflon wipers.Looks cool too.

so for e34, if i do really want to change to this wiper i need to change the whole wiper arm also as u guys said the e34 wiper is upside down?

The problems is - tell me where to find them?

Ha Ha you can get them at kakimoto at Sunway or Mid valley.Saat try the Vera you won't regret it.
