Engine rattling

Sifus,I drive a 318i e46 2.0 year 2002 and had some problem regarding the ratting noise coming from nowhere. The sound always came when the engine start. The rattling noise gets noisy when i start to switch the gear to R and D which when to start my driving. When i switch the gear back to N or P the noise gets away. Then after i switch the gear to D again it rattles. After acceleration about 20-30km/hr no noise appeared. Please advice me sifus. Bro,

I heard the rattling noise but sorry I could not identify the cause as mine is an e39. Think the rest of our e46 sifus bro are watching world cup right now and I am sure they will give you their opinion soon.

alternator?
last time i experienced the same thing...weird sound but not as loud as yours...
change/service the alternator, problem solved.....it seems the bearing of the alternator has worn out...

i'm not sure either alternator or the air cond compressor. may i know guys where is the location of air cond compressor?

it maybe the compressor cutch fan or bearing. Is the sound normal to the old air cond compressor?..but this car have changed the air cond compressor couple of years before?..

if the air cond compressor is the sound came from, would it affect the engine?..:smokin:

Location of aircond compressor under the exhaust manifold.
Try On and Off the aircond. You may now the sound from aircond or not
