Hi! everyone,I went in to get my Air Slide Valve on my E30 changed. After all the tinkering has been done, the engine was started up and during tuning a hiss was heard from my radiator flowback bottle and suddenly the mechanic realised they didn't top up the water.Water gets drained when the Air Slide Valve is being installed. The engine hit the overheat redline for about 2 minutes, maybe and upon realising it, they stopped the engine and top the water up.Does this spell trouble for the engine? When does one notice problems? There doesn't seem to be any leaks yet but how to hold the mechanic responsible? It is a big name BMW mechanic and I least expected this. What to do lah?Bluefire

Doubt it will cause any harm to your engine, luckily the mech noticed it in time...2 minutes is not that long to cause damage to your engine.

did he wait for it to cool down before putting in water?

cold water + hot cylinder = trouble later on.......

hope he didn't open the cap when it was hot too........cause the pressure may cause some pressure shift from hot to cold, so it may or may not effect your cooling system ( pray to god it didn't )

i would give him or them a piece of my mind
cause i'm sure common sense would tell that some coolant lost when changing the valve, plus the water all over the place too......

just to be safe ,monitor your coolant level next few days/weeks, and also your exhaust smoke, don't wanna scare you but better be safe then sorry, do keep us post though......

good luck

cold water into hot engine block can cause the gasket crack....

i'm not sure whether bmw engine need to carry out bleeding or not because i've not experience this before....

BMW Sifu in da club please comment :) :)

i've came across with some other continental engine....
after carry out bleeding onto the coolant circuit where no buble stay in the engine water jacket ... the car is fine.... :p :p

Just my 2cents.... :eek:k:

what's a slide air valve ? the ICV ?
you have much to learn my young padawan.......

air slide was an older version of ICV, or some might say the mechanical version, most L-jet or local models have them

basically same function as ICV, just the air slide vaccum hoses opening and closing controlled by temperature from coolant hoses runing from front block to rear
sometimes it needs cleaning as sludge from coolant can cause the valve to get stuck, on very bad cases, the valve is stuck open/close, rendering it not serviceable

gone through 3 , so now i make it a point to clean/service it whenever i flush the radiator, last one is about 3 years old........

to add to TeeJay's advice.....the ASV cost a fair bit too...so look after it!

Kinaka....yes, best to bleed your cooling circuit, check nut close to thermostat.

Mtek,

you have got the wrong picture

it's mounted below the intake manifold just above the starter
it can be seen inbetween the intake boot and power steering fluid reservoir

its like this

Yup, da item 11 in da picture is Air Slide Valve.

It has a water inlet & outlet, plus air inlet & outlet.
The temperature of da water will detemine a small valve like
inside da ASV 2 open/close hence detemining whether air flows or not.
It's a simple mechanical system.

Wolverine,

You are right in saying it is a simple mechanical system. Yet it costs RM 635.00 with installation services at 5-star servce outlets!!

I wonder if that is the reason, BMW, Banyak Makan Wang!! :yahoo:

Whatever, I am keeping this car. It is a great car to drive.
