Just curious guys..... do we need to top up engine oil in our e46 ..... mine just drop a little below the maximum line after driving about 3000 km??

Loosing a little bit of engine oil after a while is normal especially in climates like ours. Like jarance said, just make sure it's above minimum level.

I keep whatever spare oil I have left from the service for top ups.

Oh really ah guys? so its ok is it to drop a little for our cars.... mine is a 318i 2.0 .... 2003 facelift ..... thanks guys ...... i was really worried coz my previous jap car did not need any top up at all .....

I am driving year 2000 E46, i dont required any topup after driving for 8000KM coz the oil level is the same from the moment the new oil is pour into the engine. However what loafer say is true, nothing to worry if you lose abit coz its normal, even BMW manual state that. unless you are refilling 1 litre every 3-5K

Thank u moose..... i dont think it drop like that ..... just a little thats all....

i went to service my car today. they use castrol 10w - 60..i tot suppose to use 5w-40? hm..which one is better?

my humble advice is that if you really trash your engine or drive long distance or always stuck in jam, use oil with higher viscocity . for eg i use castrol edge sport rating 10-60. i drive to kl once in a while. oso stuck in pg jam once in a while.

so far all these while never have to top up oil even thought my top gasket already leaking out some engine oil.

oso 10-60 ensure extra power when driving hard or long disyance. you can always ask your mec. they can confirm these.

oh one more thing , 10-60 work very well when engine already warm up to the optimun level. so long distance driving is better suited.

I am using Q8 F1 10w-50 (engine very quiet and smooth) I have try castrol edge 5w-40, redline 10w-40 & royal purple 10w-40. I now only stick to Q8 F1, give it a try no harm and u will know what i mean
