«Consumer Language»:
A/B : gasoline and diesel engine oils

A1/B1 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in gasoline engines and car & light van
diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a high temperature / high
shear rate viscosity of 2.6 mPa*s for xW/20 and 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s for all other viscosity grades. These oils are unsuitable
for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

A3/B3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines
and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low viscosity
oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.

A3/B4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and direct injection diesel engines, but
also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.

A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline engines and
car & light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature /
High shear rate (HTHS) viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner
manual or handbook if in doubt.

Looking at the tests they have done so far, the brand that is most consistently clean in all their range is Liquid Moly and Mobil 1 oils.
I wonder how many actual Ferrari owners actually use any of that Shell Helix crap. The containers really look like containing cholesterol induced heart attack for your engine.

According to my friend, a motoring journalist in Singapore who did a report on engine lubricant oils, the reason for the particles in the oil is the addition of detergent solutions which can't take the high heat. So it's a trade off if you want more durable oils in your engine but without the detergent cleaning effects.

Added to that, the 400 degrees test tempreture is very rare to encounter in most normal engines. Probably the equivalent of running your engine non stop without coolant for an hour or two.

The above test is just a one way 400C boiling test.. in real life, there's heat/cold cycle or different mix and does our NA engine temperature reach 400C?

If its a high performance engine running flat out, there will be hot spots, like the piston and rings, where it can hit that high or higher.
But most day to day driving, I have my doubts. This is more a test to replicate extreme conditions (like an engine overheating, or a car regularly taken track racing in Dubai) to observe the lubricant's tolerances to such.

Since the test results of Shell Helix Ultra Racing was not comparable to some rival oils, then the results for the regular Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 which is sold in Tesco, which I presumed is less superior that the Ultra Racing as tested, would fare even poorer. Maybe to consider Mobil 1 New Life 0W-40 (packaged in gold colour container) instead in next purchase, also sold in Tesco.

From the recent post of Tan that BMW Super Power only cost RM25 per liter or RM100 per 4 liter it is consider a very value good oil for our cars. However from the above test it look like Castrol Magnatec

OK, let me give some clarifications on results available today. Based on these results oils may be rated/divided into 4 big groups:

1. Visually OK
2. Prone to deposition
3. Prone to deposition & thickening
4. Prone to polymerization

Oils from the group 3 show some thickening, so it’s possible to guess that after additional exposure to heat they may pass to group 4. The group 2 could be subjectively divided (visually based on appearance of boiling flasks) into 2-3 subgroups. If to judge based on color it seems oils from subgroups 1 and 2, though prone to deposition, withstanded heat relatively well. For the 3rd one test was more tough and it's very likely that after additional exposure to heat they may fail sooner than those from subgroups 1 and 2.

1. Visually OK
