Yeap thats the valve lifter sound. Bloody annoying sounds like a taxi
Just too many moving parts in the valvetronic engines
Happens when car ages/mileage.
Try adding revo to your engine oil. It helped me

the sound appeared suddenly ( did not change anything) and keep on during low speed... the sound disappear at high speed >90km/h... I sent my car to my mechanic yesterday.. Will chk em out tomorrow..

hi bro did u check the engine oil level , if the level is max there's problem with the oil flowing through the oil hole. could have the oil sludge block .

no problem with engine oil level... normal

bro u can try to add oil treatment ,or if u can take your car back to workshop dismantle the valvetronic unit and check whether there's wear and tear. all the best

Just found out (by my mechanic) the Valvetronic is damaged so have to change the whole unit :20:
the Valvetronic Motor unit itself cost RM1120... not inclusive the cover, o-rings, labor.... :20: huhuhu

Bro StopMe,

I feel your pain bro. I used to drive the N42 before. Spent heck lots of RM on the babe. I surrendered the baby 18 months due to the long list of fixing required. Just be patient and try visiting reliable BMW workshop for second opinion. Try calling Albert Fang from WP Auto. This chap always recommend you fixing that doesn't kill your pocket bro. He helped me save alot on my fixing costs.

Got my car yesterday...engine becomes very 'senyap' but when I got home... I notice my car vibrate at idle &

that might be because of hose leaking..try check with ur mechanic n revert to us..if hose wise, cost rm2k to replace the whole hose..

i drive an N42 before...feel like want to change the whole machine..damn problem...the oil filter gasket only last for 4 months..every 4 months i have to replace it..after that the plastic cover itself worn out...damn..

My mechanic reset the computer and the vibration gone... hmmm problem solved (i hope :p)

by d way, what hose r u referring to?

Perhaps the vacuum hose which is connected to the oil separator laneza is referring to. After 3 years driving E46N42, it surely needs more attention to the oil seals, gaskets and o-rings. Make sure your engine oil is changed on regular basis, the most 4 months then drain it out no matter what the mileage is. It is very "manja" I must say, just don't neglect and take short cut on maintenance. N46 also has the same symptom if I'm not mistaken (try ask Astroboy)

hi bro ,just read that u have solve the problem good luck . please take care of the service interval correctly.

This how my engine looks like when I changed cam cover gasket last year on my N42 E46. I spent hours removing the sludge then did the flushing, this condition was due to the previous owner who stick to 25k km service interval at AB. Now engine much smoother and service every 5k km using semi synthetic Synthium 800. Maybe can save from having your problem with valvetronic next time
