I just called the worksyop's cifu for the 3rd time. He maintains that there's no problem as long as the right fluid is used and he can show me invoices of E46s, E39s and E38s that have done the change wif him without problems. Once again, he assures me my baby will be OK. If it fails, he seems like the type who will feel pretty responsible to sort out the pwobwem or else gotta call on the favors of my klang tai kors... Like Schone, I shall be keeping my fingers crossed!
When is your car out from the workshop? Do a writeup la on the drive difference after the oil change.

JOhn, just ensure he fill back it up with the lifetime oils, about 80 bucks a liter I think.

The oil seal on my gearbox was leaking and to replace that I had to drain gearbox and refill again. Total parts and cost as below:

ATF (Long Life) RM48/ltr x 5 ltr TTL RM240
Gearbox oil seal RM35
Filter & Gasket RM250

TTL RM525. :getyourfactsright:

This was done on the 11th of June and todate no leak or problems (touch wood). I have travelled total of 3000kms since then with a mix of soft & hard driving. Hope all ok from now.

Ecko's car had the same problem... Started with a leak which AB fixed..and refilled tranny oil then it died. Was your car fixed at AB as well?

Golly... we should start a poll to check on all our transmission's lifespan with or without fluid change. So, far those who left it alone seem in a better position cos already got 2 cases of those who changed then kaput-ed cos of it...

Ok.
My poll:

No tranny fluid change - still the original gunk from the factory. Now slightly under 40,000kms.

Driving habits:
I get stuck in high temp traffic jams a lot in KL (with high fuel consumption). I live and work in KL, see? Where opportunities arise, it will see some S-modes with kickdowns, steptronic shifts, full throttle launches. There's the rare neutral blips after too long in idle traffic and theres the occasional redlines also.

My drives also include occasional high speed runs (say, constant 3k-4k rpm without emphasizing on warp speed factors) for a few hours at a stretch. Basically making the most of what the tranny has to offer but yet i dont think its called abuse. I call it flexing.... :)

No plans to change the fluid - just yet......

i changed my gear oil and the filter since last year sept. done up mileage 55k and now 70k. And now my transmission still working very fine.

I did the fluid change twice on my previous e39, during 100k and 150+k km. Gearbox still work fine till today.

Skycon - is the e39 gearbox oil supposed to be 'lifetime' too?

samhun - is your model E46 too?

Yeah. I'm curious to know whether the E39 gearboks is the same as E46 cos all my research and Chester's input points to E46?! Heeeelp!!

Hmm, i think both E46 328i and 325i are using the same gear oil. Coz both are 5 speed steptronic. Or maybe the E36 model uses the different type of oil. Correct me if i'm wrong.
