E46 rear bushes

Dear All, i read somewhere before that the rear subframe bushes in the E46 needs to be changed when worn or it could lead to an expensive repair otherwise. can anyone shed some light on this issue and if true, how to detect the inefficiency of the bushes.. any input is much appreciated.. regards BMW9700
