Hi everyone! Really need some advice from sifus & otai here. My '99 e46 M43 won't start after a stop this evening. Tried cranking but died after few seconds. Prior to this it showed symptoms of hard starting. I tried swapping the MAF & ICV with my friend's but to no avail. Finally I towed to my house for further investigation as most workshop are closed for the day. Some says it is the Fuel Pump, Crank Sensors, Cam Sensors, blah..blah..blah..I saw one thread by BMW7833, http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31747 but never tried what ah kwan did to his car. Should I check any other areas? My mileage is 280k. cheers

No harm to have a try, just crank your engine and hold the key for one minute, see how.

Will try first thing in the morning, but wouldn't that will damage the starter motor?

BTW, previously I sent my car to Ah Kwan in Ipoh to change my crankcase valve when I was there. Good chap!

U in Ipoh?

I'm currently in KL. Hometown Ipoh. BTW, tried cranking about 2 minutes this morning but to no avail. Checked the fuel rail valve and no fuel coming out. My first suspect would be the pump or its relay. No time to check as need to rush to the office, maybe later in the evening.

Anyone here can help me how to check the fuel pump relay? I'm kinda DIY guy so don't be shy guys. Please share..

Crank Sensor issue. M43 famous for that failure. It will lock the fuel pump once it fail.

what if the engine just simply died after the crank if not pump up the acc pedal? this only happen occasionally.

u try to ram your car up to near the redline on N and see any choking feeling.
If there is, Fuel pum problem.
If not, it will be your MAF.

hi,

If this is the scenario, most probably ICV. Just take it out and clean it thoroughly.

Regards

Thanks guys for the advices. BTW, I did mentioned swapping the MAF & ICV with my friend's but still can't start. Can't start how to ram lor..Another thing, my UDM start showing sign of lean mixture on hard throttle (loss of power) before esspecially during uphill and hard to start symptoms.

Crank Sensor? Hmm...this is a new one..kelvinjb, mind sharing where is the sensor located? Need to check on that before deciding on new pump.

Thanks

Do not crank it too long !!!!! it will harm ur starter. 1st check ur battery condition, then only cam sensor or fuelpump.

Dear Bimmers,

UPDATE. My hunch was correct that the pump was the culprit. Yesterday after removing the rear seats, taking out the pump and testing it with a 12v source, no response whatsoever. Went to Bavarian Auto and bought brand new pump, putting it back in place and cranked the engine. Voila! it fires up at first start!

Total damage;
New Fuel Pump RM400
Hose Clip RM1.20
Towing to my house RM120
Labour DIY

Lesson learnt; might thinking of having a spare pump for long distance travel later. Should any of you guys attempt to this on your own, please prepare a bucket nearby as fuel spill is inevitable..he..he..he..

For the next few days, I'll be high on petrol fumes.

Joy is BMW!

Cheers.

Hi All,

I am facing a problem where at least I need to start twice before the engine runs. However, in the first morning, i need only to start once. After all heated up, stop, then at least twice to run.

Anyone can share any idea to it?

Am driving 318i 2.0 2003/4 (Valvetronic)

Thanks
