Need help and info badly, My ride E46 318Ci (Auto) is having intermittent reverse gear failure ie. sometimes unable to reverse eventhough gearstick is on 'R' slot and indicator shows 'R'. All other gear position is OK phew... Sent my car for check but diagnostic shows nothing wrong. Please help... Anyone out there have had the same problem. Any info appreciated. Thanks. BlackCat

Sorry to hear that... i am afraid that is early signs of gearbox failure. Usually not always, reverse gear will fail first.

Have to source for a new gearbox soon or cheaper alternative is recond gearbox which might not last long.

Have you ever changed your Auto Transmission Fluid? BMW claims that their ATF fluids are lifetime guarantee, this is true if you consider 5 yrs a lifetime! now that the e46 has gone more than 5yrs + we see lots of tranmission failures due to owners never ever changing their ATF.

Anyway this is not to scare you... hopefully its something else.

Yeah.. my ride's 5 years +.. just sent it for an ATF change.. You won't believe the colour of the existing fluid when they let it out. Pitch black. Lifetime my ar*e..
