thinking of getting one used unit of E46 330i. mileage approx. 190kworth to get it? is it realiable? as its going to be my daily driven car and long distance travelling. worried on breakdown

Take particular attention to the cooling system and you should be ok. M54B30 is a robust and solid engine. Do read up on the Vanos seal replacement and other maintenance guide available in this forum to better educate yourself on the maintenance cost and issues.

You will love the torque and the smoothness of the engine.

At that mileage if you do not have previous maintenance record, do replace :

All rubber hoses for coolant, hydraulic, gearbox, fuel and vacuum system.
Change expansion tank
All beltings and tensioner
Pcv
Under carriage bushing and maybe shocks absorber iif budget permits
Some broken under carriage panels

Flush ur gearbox with lubegard flush and 12 liters of spII or III, then refill with torco viscous transmission and lubegard platinum

The above will ensure u have trouble free driving for another 100 k easily.

But.. Its ard 7-8k to do it right.

thanks a lot for the information!

about the transmission, how realiable is it?
i heard of the rear part somewhere tearing for this particular E46 model?

meaning to say 190k mileage is still a good car to get with proper maintenance?

Yes. You wont regret it.. Like bro alantiong and b33m3r mentioned above, do the pm and make a checklist.. Whatever model in the end, you will still have the same checklist anyway.. So since the amount may turn out to be almost the same.. Get the higher cc.. It should justify the amount you spent with the tourque your car have.. Hihi.. Racunzzz.. Bisaa...

the gb is not a heart breaker.. repair kit is around 2.5K. some workshop wants 5-6K for the repair. and if you are not careful, they use bryco friction plates and cheap parts. and they will change only worn parts. ask them to fly kite.. they should change everything in the repair kit.

real cost repair kit (borg warmer only-zf oem) 2500 + oils + 800 (PREMIUM) + LABOUR. so 5K is only reasonable for premium total rebuilding c/w torque convertor clean up

so i guess a fair number for labour is RM1500. its a 8-12 man hours job.

Thanks Alan. So happy to hear that there is a repair kit available. Not to worry at all. I guess will take the car. But yet to see the actual conditions and test drive
