Hi..may i know what is the normal reading temperature reading when driving on the road?mine driving for a 20 min distance it sometime show 40c.is it normal?I check the water level in the expansion tank it drop a bit when driving for a day.is it normal?May i know the best n cheap place to check is there any leaking?thanks all for giving the above info

Bro please do an introduction in the Newbies section as required by the forum rules.

Anyway for the outside temperature reading, -40C degrees is a common reading when the outside temperature sensor in front of your front right tyre under the bumper is faulty or missing.

Go to any reputable workshop they should be able to do a compression test of the cooling system for you.

40'C is not normal. Water level should not decrease for a day driving.

Presumably you are referring to the to temperature displayed on the instrument cluster, then it is not abnormal to get get 40C on a hot day especially when the car is stationary.

Pls note this is not the the coolant temperature. It is outside air temperature.

Thanks bro wutty..yes is the temperature showing on dasboard.so is normal even after 20 minutes drive to get 40c?

Tjanks haywire i done that..Pls let me know where can go to get a reasonable price check on my e39 problem.thanks bro

Doesnt matter how many minutes you're driving, its the reading of the outside temperature, and NOT the temperature of the engine.

The temperature sensor in underneath the front undertray, really close to the tarmac so on a really hot day it will read high temps. Even when you start the car it can show that temp if its hot.

If the temp sensor failed it will read minus (-) 40C degrees.

Thanks hayWire..is it possible to recommend a good workshop that i can go to?thanks bro
I wanted to check the water level too

If stuck in traffic jam for extended duration, the "outside temperature" would also increase. I had 35.5C just now in a hour-long jam in KL city center. When I finally start rempitting in clearer roads, the outside temperature dropped to 28C.
