If you were to buy either a E39 or E46 (1.8-2.2 cc), which year or variant is better? I've been told by a known mechanic that for E39, it's best to get a 520i from year 2002 and E46 the 318i 2.0. Can anyone explain why? And why not, example, 318i or 520i year 2000, etc. Thanks.

Buy e39 525i after year 2000. 520i is underpower, trust me.

If compare between e46 and e39, u must now which characteristic u like? Comfortable or sport??

For me, never choose e46 coz I LIKE BIG CAR.

The 520i (2.2 litre, M54 engine) is CKD from year 2001-2003, double vanos with torque of 210Nm@3500 rpm and 170bhp@6100 rpm. This model replaced the 523i. Interior instrument panel (facelift) is also different from the 523i

Bro, I suggest you try both models yourself with an "open mind" before deciding!

You are funny. Many ladies are BMW drivers so they will be attracted to the humble, financially secured, mature and stable guy.

I don't mind 'uncle' as it is better then the Show Off Ah Beng.. Are you one of them?

p.s. Most ladies drives 3 series.

Yes, I belong to the former ie. "the humble, financially secured, mature and stable guy";)

Well, sometimes when one hits that 'age', we tend to have that need for different things. I use to think that E38 are for uncles, driver's car, father's car....not anymore...I'm really yearning to have an E38 in my garage too. Black, 19" M Parellal rims, dropped down and Quad exhaust...yummy.....:D

Crymson, from 328 to 2l......mana boleh??????:p

General rule of thumb, its always better to buy those that were produced at the tail end of the production cycle. BY then, the car would have been face-lifted, all the problems associated with earlier production models would have been sorted out and etc.

This applies to all cars, not only BMWs. :)

p/s nice seeing you on the forum again after a long hiatus!

Bundy, :D

Jerman, thanks for the url link.

ryucky, roadtax? am driving 328 now but i think it's a waste of money to pay 1600 roadtax a year.

Daredevil, 2L good enough laa. If can be 1.3 with 220bhp even better.

Btw, the E39 is manufactured until what year?

for me, it is depends on ur body size..if u r small..it's not suitable to drive an E39...more suitable for 3 series...To be honest, I closed to buy an E39 because it looks more for gents car...but because of my body small, when I sit inside that car,my fren who watching from outside said that it is not suitable for me..looks something strange, not perfect ot not suitable..so when i change to E46..it looks more macho and suitable for me :D

cheers :D

Very true. When I was younger (in my early 30s), I always perceived that the 3 series are for the young ones, the 5 and 7 series are for "uncles" and the Benzis are for old folks, Datuks, etc (and that you won't catch me driving a Benzi W124). But now, I find the 5 series, especially the E34, kinda "sexy:D " and I don't mind even having the 7 series or even a Benzi W124. Heck, if my company ever decides to sell off their W124s, I might consider getting one:eek:.

End of the day, let's just say we are getting old....:D :D we are now becoming the dads, uncles, Datuks (for some lucky few of us)....

What's wrong of going from 2.8L to 2.0L? I did too, from 2.6L to 2.0L and from and E36 to an E34 (double downgrade.... ). But heck, I do really miss the "power" compared to my current SLOTHY ride.

Don't remind me... I downgraded from 2.6L :)cool:  :D ) to 2.0L And I now ketagih the power that I am missing now.:( :( Now thinking of plonking a 2.5L into SLOTH.
