E39 M52 or M54 engine recommendation

hi Guru's .How shall i see the different of engine whether its a M52 or M54 engine. Which engine is recommeded to buy if i am getting a E39 525i . Lately i saw a E39 525i 2000 model , is this a M52 or M54 engine . Please advice . Thanks Regards

525i and 530i with M54 after year 2000 and 523i and 528i with M52 before 2000, look for M5 with S62 V8 slurrppp...!

525 comes with a M54 while 523 comes with a M52.. after 1999 BMW did some up grade to the M52 so those engines are called M2tu.. M54 engine share most of the M52 design with many more improvement. M54 engines are better engines and ofcos newer ones. M54 are also found on the early introduction of the E60

X Benz is correct. In addition, M54 engines are fly-by-wire throttle system which offers better throttle response. Yes, the early batches (2004 to early 2005) of E60, 520i, 525i and 530i are running on M54 engines.

how do u differentiate M52TU and M54 ? since both is double vanos and i assume the vanos head will be the same size.
