The batt light on the instrument cluster lighted up dimly yesterday,compared to the rest of the idiot lights,when the key put to ON and even after starting.The alternator carbon brushes immediately came to mind.Removed the alternator and after removing the cooling assembly cover,found there were a lot of debris consisting of leaves and insects.Cleaned all up and went on to remove the voltage regulator/carbon brush assembly.Saw that one pf the brushes was shorter than the other.Gave it a good cleanup and in the process,a lot of carbon dust flew off.Gave it more thorough cleaning and voila,the shorter of the brushes popped out a good 3cm from it's housing due to caked brush dust.I reckon this will be worth at least 6 more months of life left:top:.Buttoned everything up and put key to ON - BATT light illuminated bright and extinguised as soon as the car is started and running.Just called Bav Auto and it seems they don't stock voltage regulators but sells the alternator as a whole at RM 1560 - VALEO brand.
Alternatively we can get an auto electtrician to solder in a new set of carbon brushes which will cost a helluva lot cheaper.Took 3 hours all in but just a note to all to disconnect the -ve cable from the batt when working on the elect system.
