to solve your problem. Just buy the car you like. If it an e39 then go for the 523i. If you can go for the 525i Msport. it has 218bhp standard, xenon lights, exhaust body kits all you need to do is change your rims to 19 inch and upgrade you computer chip. It can take on the 528. The chip omly cost 600sgd

Hi all brother,

I'm new register member but has been monitoring and analyse the BMW news for quite some time already.

Well, finally, got the budget to get the very first UDM.

In fact, I'm still consider whether to get a E39 520I, or the E46 318I.

See the star clacified and they have few good offer:

1. 2001 520I 2.2 Black milage= 110K selling at RM 148K.
2. 2002/03 E46 facelift converted to SMG look, milage=39K KM selling at RM 153K
3. 2002 facelift E46 millage below 50K km selling at RM 148K

I'm 29 now in 2006. Which one do you think it suite me?

Personally, I like the E39 very much. But, the 01 520 need to spend atleast RM 10K to install bodykit, change front and rear light and sportrim. So, budget a bit tight.

For the 02/03 E46, it is sporty as already convert to SMG look. But then, the interior too small and the color is marron.

What you guy think?

My advice is to follow your instinct, either car is a fine BMW..just a matter of choice..why dont you try out the cars and see which appeals to you the most..dont make choices based on other people's opinion..they live a life different from yours..

Hi all sifus,

I am looking at the Star papers as well and there are several e39 for sale. Pls help me clarify some questions here:-

1. 520I year 2002 and year 1999. Is there a difference in the engine?

2. I heard that BMW change the engine to 2.2L with 170HP around 1999.
How can I check if it's the new engine?

3. If it's double vanos, can I straight away assumed that it's the new
engine? How do I verify double or single vanos?

4. Is the 520I 2.2 4 pots compared to the 523I which is a 6pots?

5. I understand that the 523I is only 177HP. Is there any performance
difference between 520I compare to 523I if there is only 7HP diff?

6. How does performance of 525 compare to 523?

7. From my study of the pricing, it's about RM20k difference per year in
the depreciation value of the car. I need some advise on whether to buy
a newer year 2002 model compare to a yr 1999 model because the difference is rather high - approx RM50-60k. Can use some spare cash to change parts and new coat of paint!

I think the 1999 520I is only 2.0. 01 onward got 2.2, 6 cylider.

523I and 525I both is 2.5 engine. However, 523I only got 170+bhp but the 525 got 192 bhp.

I tested both 2002 520I and 525I. Interm of power, the 20bhp make a lot of different.

2002 525I should be selling about RM 170K with average milage.

Like my case, I only got budget of RM150K, so 525I cannot afford.

If budget not the problem, I believe 525I will be better choice.

all 5 series has a tendency for higher maintenance as the parts are abt 20-30% higher than a 3 series..so be prepare...

it is not the hp which makes the diffrerence..it is the torque available at a lower engine speed...observe the difference between these two...the m52b28 has 280Nm compare to the M54b25 which has 240Nm with the same hp at 192bhp...but the difference is very noticeable..

yup, absolutely spot on...but m52b28 is single vanos and in 1998 onwards was replace with the M52b28TU with double vanos...

is it necessary to service the car in AB unless it is still under warranty..a lot of BMW specialist shops can service BMW's......

The concern is, any service or part replace ment bill can be claim from company. With the condition: it must be authorise service center that allow service BMW.

In KL, there are a lot of authorise service center tha able to service imported BMW.


So, beside AB, any other alternative in PG?
