hi gurus, any one knows if a larger throttle body from say, E36 M3, will fit onto a humble M40 engine??..:)..i have one lying around, jsut not sure about fitment..for that matter, is it actually possible to bolt on a larger throttle body?...:)..thanx..:)cheers!///michael

But E36 M3 has 6 individual throttle body, isn't it???
anyway, can't have too big a throttle body bcos there's only so much the engine can suck in the air during the induction strokes. There should be an optimum width but how to get that number??

Another problem with too big a throttle body would be low air momentum causing loss of low end torque. Why? Let's picture this, same amount of WATER going thru small water hose and big water hose, which can shoot longer?

Anyway, I could be wrong but no harm experiment if you got the part to try it out.

you have e36 m3 throttle bodies lying around ?!?! wah

btw the e36 m3 has 6 throttles which are link to open at the same time

hmmm...thanx for the heads up guys..:)

the part no seems to correspond with the M3 one...maybe its the 328i one or something?..i'll go check it out..it does look like a singular throttle assembly to me..:)..hahh..just bigger than my stoick, compared side by side..:)

yeah..i also understand the loss in air pressure being a factor.. as u say, short of hardcore engineering, no idea to find out the optimum...only thru trial and error i supose..;)

has anyone tried modding their throttles??..(come on..i know there are hardcore moddies here..:)..hahh..

arrpeciate all the comments and insights..:) keep em coming man..:)..

and i'll see if i can make the part fit, this weekend..

(oops..thats TOMRROW!!!..hahha...)

too much air will cause turbulance in the flow

as per Fabs, engine can only take in so much during a combustion flow, so what happens to the extra airflow that gets past with the bigger airflow....? turbulance will cause air choking, making the engine run rich.

bigger throttle is part upgrade for larger displacement

but do tell us the results of your test, one thing i'm curious would be the CO level and O2 readings

Hai,
I believe bigger TB will works well with port n polish head + aftermarket cams. Don't worry, it would not choke your intake air. But to be frank, installing it alone won't make much diff. Hope that will help.

Cheers.

yes, bore the M50B25 trottle body by 4mm overall diameter, costs about RM400.00 to do it.

as for the M52B28 trottle body extra 1 mm only, total 5mm cos the difference is 1mm between the both in original form.

the increase is good in top end and accelration is noticeable.

regards.

ps. make sure the inside is high polished finish, better air flow.

could be from the US M3 you are referrin which doesnt have the 6 individual throttle...

fitting a 6 cylinder engine throttle body into a standard 4 cylinder engine doesn't make much sense, but i maybe wrong......

that's why i'm curious to know the output of the CO and O2 readings, that way it will show what combustion its running lean or rich and at what kind of persentage increase......

even if it was a US M3 throttle body, it is the same size as the OBD 1 sizes which is the same as the 2.5L and the US M3.2 shares the same throttle body as the M52 ,2.8L confers to the OBD2

bigger isnt neccessarily better.....

hmm...thats a lot of information there..:).

it *is* a US spec M3 throttle.. came from a '98 car .. from our combined stash of parts!..:)..

frankly not sure what the effect is either.. also have no way of accurately telling the CO and O2 readings...

BUT...if i manage to shoe horn the bugger in, and *start* the car.... then perhaps i'll manage to find out what the effect is..if anything at all..:)...

cheers!...:)

michael

PS: Skar: i'll let u know if the *spare* one comes in next week or something...so u can tinker with it..:)
