Appreciate advice on my e34 Radiator problem.Overheating due to radiator outlet hose leak. Underwent top-overhaul as top gasket was "burned". Also replaced was radiator cap, expansion tank / sensor. The car drives fine with water temp indicator almost touching 50%. No over heating or loss of coolent at all. Now, when engine is cool (not driven the whole day) and when the raditor cap is opened. The coolent will "shoot" up like a fountain. Why is the pressure still so strong with a cool engine? Is it normal? My BM specialist is at a total loss. He even replaced 3 raditor caps with the same result every morning.

Nicholas Chin,

Welcome to the Club. Do introduce yourself in the Newbies Thread so that we can get to know you better and for the Members to advise you further.

Thankyou.

could be your thermostat is jam'ed up or you have a air lock somewhere...
or maybe your hoses are in the wrong place.
but e34 525i 24V are simple in radiator bleeding, no need to bleed so much.

but check your thermostat. usually the main suspect.

Waterpump ?

Hi Bimmmers,
I'm from pussy land (mieowww) aka cat city. My ride is an e34 1995 525i(A). She is stock standard other than the High Performance Ignition Coil Set purchased from US which makes her stand out from the crowd.
True kah.....

Puss,
Water pump was replaced not too long ago.
Mechanic ruled out the thermostat but ????? Confirmed the hoses are in the correct places.
Bleeding done numerous times.
Maybe have to sent in to Auto Bavaria as a last resort.
Thanks for sharing.

you did not mentioned that if you serviced the radiator . it could be clogged.

so are from Kuching.. there is a large group of them that meets up.

regards.

Sad to say I am currently working in the land below the wind and as such goes back once every 2 months. The car is seldom used. The radiator was not serviced.
Question: Can a clogged radiator build up pressure?

to answer your question, YES.

imagine that the radiator pressure with the cooling in the engine reaching boiling point and maintained at 200psi, with all the water circulating inside the radiator, it moves very fast and it's clogged up, inefficient cooling.
i believe that the radiator caused your pipe to be dislodged, hence a top overhaul due to the inefficient cooling.

it's like your lungs, not enough to breathe if you have a clogged lung.

regards.

sounds like maybe your head and/or block might be the cause. there are holes on your head and block where the water flows through. due to rust, the holes might have become bigger and closer to the cylinder. so the waterways will become pressurised, even if the car is left overnight. when u open the cap, water shoots out like fountain :)

this is worst case scenario. if it is, be prepared to open head and/or block. have to send machine shop to weld back the holes. $$$....

yeah, believe head might b the cause, the head surface might become uneven due to overheat, u need to skim the head in your last top overhaul plus use a thicker gasket to replace the old one.

talking abt radiator...i had enuf of it...my car just landed in workshop and got the radiator changed. This is the 3rd time the radiator being changed. Really sucks!! I rarely use the car for town ride nowadays due to petrol consumption....it kills man!! The recent problem i had was with the radiator valve (next to the cap) It seems the water splashes our from the valve when it's hot. Even after replacing the valve, the problem still persists..and i had no choice but to change the entire radiator....lower arm is also another common problem...headache laaaa...
