Anyone who has driven an old Iswara or Saga with a carbuarettor will remember the infamouse tappet symphony the engine makes when 1. It's hot outside 2. You're going up a gradient and malas to change gear. You'll hear the irckey-tickety-rickety-tick until you change gear. Now, this should not happen on a M50TU right? Unless what I'm hearing is not tappet noise. It happens at about 1,800-2000RPM and usually for a very short duration of 1 second or less when I gently press or release the throttle. It use to be a rare occurance but these days i'm hearing more of it. Anybody has this problem? Could it really be tappet noise? Hell I've never heard tappet noise on my Sentra and my Altima before except when I blew a water pump on my Altima and the engine overheated. Could the M50 have tappet noise?

I think may be hydraulic lifters. Could be clogged. I used to have these noises but with Q8 oils the noise is drastically reduced, though still there.

Correct. The tappets should not be making those type of noises as they are self adjusting. It could be the lifters.

I had the exact same problem and MODIC showed that the camshaft position sensor (also called the "pulse generator") had failed. Got it changed for a small fortune (RM600 plus inc. diagnostic and labour) and the sound went away. Sifu chankl in the previous forum pointed out that the price I paid is par for the course for that w/shop as its pretty labour intensive. Research verified that it was.

OS Flanker : rugby, karting, UDM-ing, and nature? You got a lot of interests, bro! Love your signatures!

Not sure if it's tappet noise at all but sure sounds like it. Unlike the Proton variety which rickety-ticks until you change gear, mine only lasts for very short bursts less than a second mostly.

On the same topic, the M20 engine tappets needs manual adjusting as compared to self adjusting hydraulic lifters of the M50. My question is if an M20 engine tappets are noisy and you don't get them adjusted, what implications are there besides the noisy tappets?.

Drop in engine performance, more wear and tear or tappets, etc??? Anyone care to enlighten.....

OK Guys, it's not tappet noise. It's PINKING!!! My engine is pinking at between 1800-2200RPM under load and only at that RPM range. Why? Any ideas dear sifus? :dunno:

Woohoo!!! I made the Tappet Noise/Pinking Sound go away!!! :yahoo:

How? I flushed the radiator! :dunno:

My radiator had never been flushed since buying the car about 8 months ago and it was causing pockets of air to build up in the engine cavities which caused my engine to run extra hot although coolant temperature was a constant middle mark. And heat was causing the Pinking! Thus rickety-tickety-tick!!!

But after flushing the radiator and using 1.5litres filtered water and 1.5litres BMW coolant for a 50/50 mix, my problem is now solved!!! :yahoo:

And the really amazing thing is that my engine runs so much quieter now too with power to boot during hot days!

bro..how much did it cost u?

It cost me RM25 The cheapest performance mod :D

Go to Bavarian Auto in SS2 and buy a bottle of BMW coolant for RM25 and then go get some empty 1.5litre mineral water bottles and fill up with filtered water or distilled water if you can get.

The rest is manual labour! :)
