here's the annoying noise...when pulling the steering to the left, there is a lot of noise (humming noise) coming from the tires. however, this noise disappears when i steer toward the right. the noise is there at all speeds but rarely and veryrarely it disappears only to come back. i also found that steering toward the left appears to be slightly "heavy". could this be due to tires? what could be the culprit? thanks to all those e30 or tire experts out there for your diagnosis.

Most probably your tyre bearing.

you mean the wheel bearing? it feels heavier when pulling to the left. anyway, i'll have it checked.

thanks.

maybe your gigi sudah makan on the left..

but, usually it's your ball joints that's the culprit.. change it..

at first i had thought it's the balljoint lower arm but i think this is unlikely to be the case for me. lower arm sudah ganti baru in 9'2004 together with bushes and besides i don't detect any "play" during steering. perhaps i have to hoist it up to check for confirmation.

mewnahile, i had the car checked by the mechanic just now and he told me it's the right wheel bearing. he told me it's the right wheel bearing because steering toward the right side does not produce any noise! logical ke?

how much is the bearing? and replacement cost?

???

I think your mechanic is right. When you steer to the left, the weight will be more to the right, thats when your bearing will receive more load.
To be more confirm, while your car still on hoist, rotate the wheel and put one end of a long screwdriver to the suspected hub and the other end to your ear (similar concept with statoscope (the one that used by doctor, i think). If the bearing really bad, you can hear a rought sound. You can try all four wheel and differenciate it sound between each other.

For the price let me check my database 1st

hi strider;

the more i pull to the left the noisier it becomes (louder humming noise). your logic could be right due to more load on the right.

i think i will have it checked to confirm once more. hopefully it's not the lower arm balljoint!

thanks to all you guys!

Wheel Bearing

On 18/4/2005 @ BM Tech USJ @ odometer 273663

Change rear wheel bearing (Part no. 33411130617) - material cost RM110.00. Workmanship don't know cost inclusive of other things that i do on the same day.

On 11/6/2005 @ BM Tech USJ @ odometer 275945

Change front right wheel bearing (Part no. 31211131297) - material cost RM220.00. Workmanship RM30.00.

And now my odometer reading is 305644

Hope this will help.

thanks for the part #. 30,000 km in just 2 years? you seldom use the car?
BTW, how do you know the rear wheel bearing has to go? any tell tale signs?

bearing sound

Nope, the reading not in km. it is in miles.

Normally humming sound will come from a bearing. Tyre humming sound will be a little bit different. To make it sure, I'll do as i explained before or else any experience mechanic can diagnos it easily.

If you hoist up the car and rotate the tyre using your hand, a defective bearing can easily be heard.

o/t - Are you members of AROC?

ok, in miles and i also do roughly 35K km a year. the sound is louder today as higher speed left hander. kinda scared the wheel will fall off...

i used to be a member of AROC but not anymore. i am now driving BMW and try to do BMW-speak.

hi strider;

i jacked up y front tire to test the rotation. thre is some "play" when i tried moving the tire to the left and right. but it is tight when i moved it vertically, i.e. placing my hands on top and bottom of the tire.

could this still be the bearing? or some kind of linkages?

thanks.

That must be the tie rod/ball joint. That why you feel floating while driving.

But a defective bearing doesn't mean there's a free play.

replaced new bearig front right wheel bearing (Part no. 31211131297) S$68
replaced new LH steering tie-rod (due to worn ball joint) S$40
labor = RM110

humming sound is gone and steering feels tight and no more "floating"

e30 "duk duk duk dukdukdukduk..." sound

after installing a new wheel bearing to the front right and a new LH tie-rod, there is now a strange noise that sounds like "duk duk duk" below 50 and as i go faster it sounds like "dukdukdukdduk..." the pace quickens. this noise persists whichever direction i steer - left, straight or right. and it is more pronouced when i step on the brakes, like some kind of grinding noise.

it feels like a patch of tire(s) is gone and the tire is no longer round???:(

this noise developed after i did my second alignment:

1st alignment: +1.2mm +1.20 mm toe but the steering wasn't straight and so i asked to do the second one. i don't rememeber any "duk duk duk" noise.

2nd alignment: +2.2mm +2.2mm steering is straight but strange nosie appears. occasionally i find the steering harder to steer:confused:

what is the recommened toe in for this lowered e30 car? the car is using Terra springs.

so guys, what do you think is the culprit?:confused: :confused: :confused:

Most alignment machine got the specs for E30. You can ask the tyre technician to set it up for you.:D

thanks zog;

this alignment shop does not have any reading. but the book says it is +2.0mm +-0.6. but is this the cause of the noise?
