Hello Sifus,I've noticed that there are more brake dust accumulation on my E30 right front wheel than the left. I've just changed my brake rotors a few weeks ago because of warped brake rotors on the right. There was also more brake dust on the right (i thought it was because of the warped discs).Any idea what is wrong?SC

Oh ya. My E30 (1990) engine is also very noisy. I've asked the mechanic about it and he says i need to change the plungers to get rid of the noise.

Can anyone tell my what are plungers?

Thanks!

SC

Maybe it's time to service the brake calipers... the seals may have hardened over the years and miles, so it may tend to bind a bit more on 1 side causing the brake dust... I serviced both calipers (left and right) and noticed that the braking improved.. Before the service, it tends to lock up on 1 side more easily. After the service, braking is even on both sides and less brake dust too...

If i recalled correctly, the service kit is about RM35/caliper so about RM70 for both sides and labour about RM100... more or less...

Thank you for the advice.

I don't think the calipers have ever been serviced ever since i bought the car. Will get the service kit. Thanks again.

M1 was the one who says i need to change them plungers. Will get the parts first before sending the car to the mechanic (thanks for the advice), can you update if your noise levels are reduced after changing the plungers?

DUDE! don't bloody go to M1!!!! they're prices are super cut throat wei..wait..lemme confirm..have u changed your teppets?if you have pls let me know i'm gonna slap the shit out of the mech zuki there..sounds like a con to make us change plunger also..no i haven't changed plungers, but he said that could be the problem..i took to other mechs all said its teppets not plungers..so i'm gonna see la on tuesday..pls let me know if your case is similar as mine..have u changed the teppets?

Hi SC...my mech qouted me 400++ to change all the hydraulic lifter (8 of them) on my E30M40...
Btw, Haynes Service and Repair Manual BMW 3&5 series refer it as' hydraulic tappet' but I cannot find anything called 'tappet' or 'plunger' in Autodata Car Manual BMW 3 series 1975-90....
Maybe any sifu could guide us on this.....blurr ler..

Keen to know basis of ur 2nd remark....pls post ur repair bill details and we have a thread specially for this under E30 Maintenance.

A few of us go to M1, so keen to know where and how u got "con" - our experience so far reinforces the tag line "you get what you pay for".

For benefit of all, pls do the above on para 1.

According to the mechanics at M1, E30 does not have tappets but plungers that runs on hydraulics. I guess thats the same as what Anakin mentioned about "Hydraulic Lifters".

To be more accurate, M1 didn't advice me to change the plungers. They just explained that the noise is because of the plungers and if i want less noise i will have to change them. Since it is expensive to change the plungers, i decided to live with the noise forawhile until i can afford to change them.

Jagmalhi dude, i haven't changed my "tappets/plungers/hydraulic lifters" yet. So engine is still noisy for now.

for teppets they charged me 600 when in bavaria can get around 380 for a set..make 220 bucks just on part?>_< a bit sial man. and my paint job got scratched!!grr

sclim,

one method to reduce the tapet noise is to use thicker oil and to change oil more frequent, i.e 3 months once. Also try engine treatment like X1R which helps. Since it's your new car, i would suggest you do oil change 1st and run it for 1K, then change oil. then one month later, change oil again. use the mineral oil 10w-40. Then do oil change every 3 months. It should helps.

Since you need to change your tapets, it's adviseable if you want to keep the car. My advise is to do a top overhaul. You can purchase the top overhaul set from BA or 1st Div, then buy the tapets and also change the camshaft. WHen you do that, you can also change your distributor stuff or get a new set of plug cables. All these will cost you back till 3K.

But after that your m40 should be long lasting, quiet, fuel efficient and powerdeful.

Hello Elwin,

Thank you for the advise. Actually i do intend to keep the car. I am planning also to replace the tappets but that will be later. I will definitely keep in mind your suggestion to do the top overhaul and change camshaft at the same time i do the tappet change.

Wow... 57% margin for the parts is very high. They might be charging the same rates as authorised BMW service centres.I think best advise is to buy your own parts and pay them for the labour and service instead.

Cheers to you guys for the advice. I've learnt more about my E30 from you guys in a few months than through myself over 2 years. :)

SC

lol so what i do is buy my parts and pay them labor..of course labor also is a bit high, but for engine they got the technical knowledge la..elwine30 just wondering, whats in the top overhaul set?

i already changed cam shaft, tappet and some arm like thingy..spent about 1.8k including labor.what else is there?

rocker arm you mean. top overhaul consist all the gaskets (valve, head, o rings and etc).

jag, whatever you have changed is good for the internals. Also do check on your vacumn hoses and etc.

Rm3k for a top overhaul? Would that really do alot of good for the engine?

My M40 has clocked about 241k km already and the idea of an overhaul was put into my head by my friend after I told him how much mileage my car has done.

As it is, I feel that at certain revs my M40 sounds abit like a lorry. :(

Which M1 did you go to? The one in Segambut or the other branch?

Could you give an itemise price for your repair work. It would be fair then to judge whether the price billed is overcharge.

i have been to M1, Segambut for about 10 years now. Their price is reasonable considering that they don't insist that you change things that is deem not necessary. Furthermore, most of my problem are solved the first time unlike some workshop is doing the guessing work but never really do the job. In the long run, going to a workshop many time to solve the same problem would work out to be more expensive even though it might be cheaper charge.

evil,

my car travel up to 300,000 without overhaul but the engine gave way after i put some stress into it. it died.

actually, top overhaul is about 1.2k, which i did for my cousin e36m40. but i include changing the camshaft, tapets, rocker arm, plug cables, vacum hoses, new bellow and misc, would set you back almost to 3k.

in fact, 3k is over quoting as i don't want to tell you guys it's cheap. but it's work the money.

however, if you car sound like a lorry, it can be your clutch bearing. try depressing your clutch when you are stationary and see if still sound like a lorry

Thanks a lot bro elwine...a very good advice I might say....start saving now, my m40 tappet also sound like lorry, but only in the morning (on the first start)...then okey for the whole day...
infact I just called my mech & he qouted 400++ to change the tappet...then I changed my mind, top overhaul is on the way...but do we really need to change the distributor thing?
