Do you only change to 'N' when your car is COMPLETELY stop, or push to 'N' when it is almost stop or either like 'Manual Trans' driver immediately change to 'N' when you know you are going to stop :D ... I myself will change to 'N' when it is almost stop... Not sure how damage on the transmission if switching mode while car still moving. :hmmmm: But I'm pretty sure changing from 'N' to 'D' while car still moving will certainly bring more harmful on transmission compare to 'D' to 'N'...

kimi,

perhaps my question is why would you need to coast ie. shifting to neutral while your car is still moving?

i would even suggesting leaving it in D ( with brake pedal pressed ) when stationary for the emergency case you need to inch forward or move out of harms way when a vehicle behind you starts emergency braking! The brakes are pressed as it activates your rear brake lights to inform the driver behind you are stopped......plus it also saves your auto box from premature wear. ( so i was told )

if all fails, drive a manual and you are in complete control! :)

Ok, means you will hold to 'D' all the way until you shut down the engine...

I used to be a Manual & CVT driver before, kinda dont like feel of the moving force in 'D' and we use the 'brake' to stop it forcefully. Perhaps switch to 'N' will reduce the force as well as save your brake from wearing faster, and i do think that the passengers will have more comfort & smoother feel too. :D

With a CVT car and drive more than 160000KM previously, with this driving style, the CVT still works OK to me. But i dont dare to change to 'N' when cruising... Just only switch to 'N' few meters away from stop completely (and i know i need to stop for long).

I believe keep changing the mode ('D' - 'N' or 'N' - 'D') will produce more wear in transmission, but how about continuous moving-stop-moving-stop and maintain in 'D' (like in traffic jam), would the force convert into wear in transmission? Any idea? :D

If I am not mistaken, when you shift to neutral, the gear box cooling system will temporary disengage. May be this is applicable to older design and not too sure latest gearbox design.

from the last visit to ZF talk , they mentioned that it will not cause any harm to the box stopping at D but not for a very very long time ...etc 30 minutes or so ...

but why switch to N and let you car move freely before stopping it ..seems dangerous to me as case if you need to step on the pedal before a full stop and switching back to "D" this will cause more HARM then anything else as your car need to be in a total full STOP before switching back again to D ...

if you fancy to switch to "N" then might else well get a manual transmission :)

the cooling system will still work but what you get is a release of load from the torque convertor which seems to get a lighter felling ... not mistaken once the car is being turn on the cooling system will start to work accordingly ...

I have seem or personally see few type of driving style.

untill now there are still lots of person would like to push to "N" while the car is still moving to stop.

another 1 is they engage to "D" but use both leg ( right to Acc and Right for break). they are like driving F1, they can press both pedal at the same time while in traffic jam to prevent other cut into their Q.

Nothing wrong mechanically but not suitable for BMW because while u are gliding on 'N', suddenly the jam clears or traffic light turn green, u can't engage 'D' in a moving BMW compared to Jap cars, without stepping on the brake pedal. A sudden stepping on the brake in a moving vehicle when traffic light is green, will give the trailing car a shiver in his balls.. :4:

I dont think I ever engage to N unless I want to push the car a bit by hand.

bro, u still able to engage to 'D' if the speed is more than ~15-20kmh... :D without stepping on the brake...

Yes I agree on this, can switch to D from N in a moving e46. Done that to my car. I sometimes also switch to N when stopping. Leaving the gear in D would help in braking due to engine braking, mostly useful when I lost brake boost last time, during emergency or reducing brake lining/pad wear. Will engine assisted braking consume more gas?

yep you'll still be able to engage to "D" at 15~20 km/h ...but then you would be loosing your torque converter soon due to the sudden load applied to it ....

Which defeats the purpose of moving the gear from D to N in the first place (to reduce engine/gearbox load)

..also ur shifter koyak faster...up and down up and down..........

also waiting for our club doc to comment the same thing about left leg on clutch for manual tranny...

"somewhere in your left wrist/hand/arm/shoulder ligament/muscle/bone/joint etc will wear off prematurely"

what about turning off the engine at the traffic light? i read in the manual it says to press the button to off engine if stop more than 5 secs... said will save fuel... is that true?
