well said gripen....

if you want to extract more power from a BMW, than i think its wise to to get a motorsport series....

i guess, my e21 managed to survive this far is because of the less 'tinkering' attitude... whereby everything is kept stock standard as near as possible to standard specs giving a little leeway on adjustments due to the age of the car.

BMW have already spent a lot of money, time and effort on R&D on a particular model before launching so its best to leave things as they are unless one is prepared to 'invest' in the M series which has been factory tuned and all tolerances kept to the very minimum.

so 'tweaking' it further on any BMW can be at times, disastrous and costly. so, if money is no objection to you and is falling from trees by all means, indulge.... otherwise play it safe and let the engineers at BMW do what they are paid to do.

cheers

well, the older engines are okay up to the M50..after that,it all turned sour, for me at least.explains why the e30,e34,e36 are so tuneable and with plenty of options to choose from.
like we both said, new age bimmers are superb in standard form..once u have that craving to tinker around,it all turns sour..:(

UNLESS u get the //Ms la...but how many of us can afford them, let alone maintain them??

I got no problem with my yr 2000 CBU E46 323i. I don't encounter any reliability issues such as power window, ratling sound, power steering etc...still feel like new. Just replaced my expansion tank and others wear/tear parts as a preventive maintenance. Carried out the gearbox flushing at 90k km and oil servive at every 8000km interval.

Cheers.

bro, notice that the 323i/328i seemed less troublesome than others in the e46 range?? a neighbour of mine(a lady doctor)just sold off her gawd-awful 325i which was giving her sooo much trouble..thing is,she always comes to me for help!!(as if i can help!!).so sad to see..she vowed not to use another bimmer ever again, and hers was bog standard.

hi all,

i think i can conclude that owning a BMW is like being married la...

just ask yourself honestly, if its worth the while, effort, headaches and depression staying with all the down side one has to take from one's spouse eg: the constant nagging, to apologise eventhough sometimes we are in the right, the quarrels, the look when you had to pay the repairs done to your car instead of getting her those jewellery which she had longed, not getting sex if she is pissed with you etc, etc....

if you feel its worth the while staying married then by all means honour those vows and STAY MARRIED!

likewise owning a BMW... with all the constant attention given to the car, the reliabilty issues, the repair bills and cost of replacement parts that makes one feel like committing suicide then maybe its high time one should consider an alternative make of car.... if you want out, no?

but one things for sure, in marriage after all the shouting and anger have subsided, the make up sex is AWESOME... i tell ya!

cheers all

oopppsss....

lucky the wife wasn't looking.these days,i'm having less of that..gotta get back to the middle of the road la.no more hanky panky...NOT!!!:p

Brother Supergripen. So I assume that what you are saying is that the E46 is when all the trouble begins? Tho it is a great looking car (some may disagree ;)) it is too problematic to maintain? Is that why so many people are opting for the E46 318i?

Hmm, looks like I wont be getting an E46 after all. Maybe when I start earning more I'd look at the E34 or maybe the E39 (eh Abang Yazid??:D)

Peace

D

Someone I know had so many problems with his E46 328i he almost sued. The dispute was later settled amicably.

Whoa!!! So? Can I assume that the E46 has won in this thread in terms of problems caused? Can it be? BMW's famous German engineering has inadvertantly created a Cra.p car???

Wah, like that even if someone, like my parents or rich friends (I WISH:rolleyes:), offered to buy an E46 for me, I would turn it down loh... Unless it's an ///M3 lah!!!:p

Buying a BMW is the easy part, the question is can you afford to maintain it well ;-)

not only me..just have a look at Daniel's car,and some others.

i'm not implying that all e46s are bad, mine is still running strong but its bog standard with no mods to the engine la..so i'd expect it to be good, maintanence wise.and so far it has..

end of the day,its all up to you.

marbe some buyers just not so lucky as others?

some ppl modify too much?

some ppl buy 'recond' car?

some ppl buy AB car?

some ppl trash their cars?

some ppl dont trash their car enuff?

who knows man.. my 4yo e46 not yet change expansion tank.. the garage guy says it'll explode (last year). guess i'm lucky

Bro Supergripen,

I know deep inside you still love the beemer. And also deep inside I know you love the M3 so much. You are the one who got me into this in the first place. We both feel the need bro-the need for speed. Can't afford to lose you bro.

BTW bro, have u read the thread about the RM92mil astronaut issue in the 'autobahn' section??? very interesting read la...

I've had my E46 from new but now that it's almost 5 years old, a lot of things beginning not to feel as it should be. Just today, my gearbox went really cranky refusing to upswift even when the rpm went up 5,000 rpms. The thot of a busted gearbox just under the 100,000 kms mark got me breathing farnee!

You should swap cars with E46F to average out the mileage - haha!

Well, I don't want funny stains in my car :p . JPB's E46 has seen a whole lot more action then mine, and maybe thats why its complaining now... Ya know, jealous ma.

Seriously tho, the E46 is not THAT problematic, but is definitely not a Japanese car. I hope I will be saying the same thing when my car hits 100k kms LOL. But maintenance is costly. My car is in AB now doing inspection II (@64k kms)... I wonder how much $$$ will be burned this time around... Sigh.

E46F,
what's on AB's list of things to replace/do/check for Inspection II?

Cost?
