There seems to be a growing number of dissatisfied UDM owners (Rightly so if you have spent so much on a car) posting their unhappiness on the forum. From my own observation, the majority of it seems to be E46 owners. Is it true?Lets start a small head count and see.Disgruntles owners post here (Name & Model): 1.2.3.4.

Disgruntled is a little strong... I think I am more dissapointed than disgruntled. My dissapointment is will the reliability and high cost of parts replacement. Just got a call from Energy, his PS pump just let go (same feeling as taking out $1000-$2000 cash and light it up and watch it burn) and I am sure its just a matter of time before mine does. The E46 is definitely not in the same league as the Jap cars when it comes to reliability.

DISAPPOINTED owners post here (Name & Model):

1. Perngy (E46 318i 2.0 Year 2002 April)
2.
3.
4.

Maybe can add want cheeses u off so this thread can be constructive
Good suggestion! Don't get me wrong, I am happy with mine.

:D

Just wanna see which model has the most problems

I think members should consider participating in this thread or other threads that require data collection. At least we can start from here rather than bitching about the reliability of UDMs or the service given by AB. Otherwise, we will end up as NATO (No Action Talk Only)

E46 325i Step CKD

1) Failour of control arm bushings

2) Failiour of front control arms. Took AB months and months to refund my payment after work was done.

3) Failour of some engine sensor leading to a breakdown on the public roads.

4) God knows how many power window lifters i have replaced. Once leading to the scratching of my window tinting.

5) Head gasket leak

6) Oil filter gasket leak

7) Water pump failour. Another road side breakdown

8) Fuel level failour. Ran out of petrol, again stuck on the main road.

9) Expansion Tank explosion. Roadside breakdown AGAIN.

10) Failour of window washer fluid pump

11) The constant bulb replacement of the rear brake lights

12) Failiour of the handbrake brakeshoe, causing the rear brake to rattle and ding and dong . So, instead of another roadside assistance at 8pm on the N-S highway, drove the bloody thing all the way back to Penang.

13) Gearbox jammed in 4th gear while outstation going up Cameron Highlands, and guess what! AB roadside assistance does not cover Cameron Highlands!

14) Steering column rattle. to replace will be a cost of 3k. Screw that!

15) Failiour of the mounting clips of the kidney grilles. Due to the heat from the engine, they become brittle and snap off.

16) Deflection of exhaust heat shield, causing rattling.

17) The centre console rubberized finish, what was BMW thinking!!!???

18) Leaking boot, somehow water can find its way into the left side of my boot.

Oh my... no wonder Daniel is so pi**ed off! I had an airbag failure due to faulty belt tensioner and complained that I neber used airbag b4, how can it become faulty?!!. Then, there's like 1001 sensors that break down one by one and cost a bomb to repair. I can relate to E46's analogy. BUT... how many other cars at this price range is as fun to drive, fun we enjoy everyday we get into the car? Oh well... what an impurrfect world we live in! I think my ex-E36 318i was far more reliable than my E46!

and this all happened with 2.5 years of ownership.

But are rivals like Mercs any better? I have heard horror stories from disgruntled Merc owners too.

Perhaps Lexus is the answer - probably slightly less enjoyable to drive than BMWs but far more reliable?

not so in Perngy's case. I will feel dreadful to have to think of when and where the car will leave me stranded by the roadside evertime I get into the car. No level of fun and enjoyment can compensate. added to the embrassement especially if you are taking clients wow...i will tow the car to PNDC and push it into the tasik...will pay hommage along the way.

I've got my share of complaints (ok, "disappointments") as well. List me!

Even CBU BMWs got problems too. I was loaned a new-ish CBU 530d and was surprised to note that it's left front door was happily squeaking and rattling away.

I suppose no car is perfect...

Mercs are not spared too. I have met ex Merc owners in AB whilst we were waiting for our BMWs to be attended to and most of them don't have very nice things to say about their C-Class (1st and 2nd gen) or E-Class (typically the W210). Think the Merc W124 is super reliable? One guy told me his E60 525i (M54 192 bhp) is so reliable compared to his old W124!

Gosh...u guys are really giving me the creeps! :D :D :D

Bought my CBU N42 early last year (2003 brand new with used Naza AP).
I've done 26k since buying the car in Feb 05.
After one year, the driver's side power window lifter died on me. And two months ago, the passenger side followed suit most likely due to lack of use (probably used top 10 times the whole year!). :( :( :(

Other than that, wife and me make sure we take the car up to 180km/h at least twice a week. I am inclined to agree with Amereth (from the earlier thread that spawned this one) that you need to "thrash" the car regularly. Have not had any mechanical problems whatsoever. But perhaps thats coz my ride is not yet in the 3-4 year bracket.

Damages so far/in the near future :

1. A dozen speeding tickets from plying the Subang/KLIA route.
2. Bloody RM2.15 Shell V Power!!!
3. The stone chips/pimples/insects committing suicide all over the bumper
4. A new set of Falkens most likely before the end of the year

I suppose wifey n me have accepted the fact that there's a price to pay for the driving pleasure. We can handle paying the numerous speeding tickets that we've been getting but whether we can handle the $$$ cost for the maintenance...well...only time will tell...
