Greetings to all,One of my two diamond shape key which auto lock-open+boot lock is not working. I think the innate rechargeable battery is faulty. I know where to buy the replacement battery, and the theory in DIY. But if possible, i would rather pay a few bucks and get an experience fellow to fix it.Anyone knows of any pro that does this? Thanks.

My spare key have similar problem like yours. Where is the shop that sells replacement battery??

Jarance,

Rechargeable battery is dead as I used the spare key for1 week and still no charge i.e. cannot remote activte lock+ unlock-doors + boot unlock. I have even tried to sync with the other working key without any success.

Herbert, you can try to use CR2035 which is non rechargeable type to get the key working first. It is confirmed that the battery is no good, then only get the rechargeable type. If it does not work, the Cr2035 is not so expensive.

I have check jerman key before and the voltage was 3.1 volt. So it was not the battery. Some people say it could be the switch as well.

Herbert & Fugowitz,
The diamond shaped key is not meant to be opened as it has a self-charging battery! I forced mine opened and Jarance did an "open heart analysis" but failed to revive it! So, have to live with the remote not working but able to start car only.

Well, I had a diamond key that didn't work either. You can start the car with it but no remote functions. So after some research. I found this:-

My Dad and I dissected the key and went to Panasonic to buy the VL2020 rechargeable battery for RM35. Panasonic had to import it direct from Japan. Removed the old battery with its holder, broke it out of its holder, soldered on the new battery onto the holder, soldered the holder back on the circuit board and glued back the casing using Araldite. Viola! Remote functions available.

We didn't dremel in the screws. It is a nice idea by we had no dremel tool. If you can dremel it you can use a non-rechargeable battery and change it when it goes flat.

Salut

Thanks for sharing. Well done for a successful "open heart surgery" :top:

On top of that, the key is rechargeable. If only I could find a reason to drive 100km to fully recharge the battery.

And the instructions for re-synchronising or re-initialising the key are here:- http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forum...2&postcount=14

Salut

100km is not that far. Return journey from Selayang to Putrajaya is easily 100km. Also if you really want to charge your key drive through kl in peak hours, by the time you get out it'll be charged hehe

Unfortunately I'm in Kuching, Sarawak. No highway. Roads in town are bad enough, imagine the roads just 20km out of town.

Salut

what model/year is your bmw?

Is your spare key original?

btw, there is no such thing as spare key. Both keys are master. You should rotate them.

Suspect that your transponder in the key is damaged or corrupted.

Dear All,
Thanks for the inputs.
The key which isn't working is the one which I use frequently (i.e. at least once a week but hardly more than twice). It used to work very well, then the distance to activate the remote becomes shorter and shorter ...until it doesn't work anymore. The spare key works well from good distance. Hence, I suspect the rechargeable battery is gone. From the tonnes of DIY available, ...it appears the solution is as described by SOLO. The panasonic battery can be bought. It is just that the opening-up the key and the soldering bits require some tool & skill. After changing the battery, the keys need to be synchronized again. I was hoping that there are pros other there who do this for "teh-tarik" money. Hey, SOLO where are you based in the Land of Hornbills?
Cheers, all.

This is what you're looking for:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290460342423&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

They'll replace all the switches and put in a new rechargeable battery for you. £27.50 plus £7.50 shipping to Malaysia.

Not exactly teh tarik money though.

Dont worry about the syncronisation, the procedure dont even take 30 seconds to complete.

Yup, it does sound like a faulty battery. when the voltage of the battery gets lower and lower, the ability to transmit the coded signal will becomes shorter and shorter.

why dont you get the rechargeable battery first. We can do some DIY.. I got some tools for open heart surgery.

btw, I am in Klang during weekend.

What tool do you use to open the key? I'm considering buying a Dremel tool just in case...

I've received my new blank key from eBay..direct comparison with my ori new key with the ebay one...the plastic cover was very...plasticky...China-made quality. And the BMW emblem was upside down!

Ori key on left, eBay key on right

Surface quality..the ori key on the left have a good grain on them..

But I guess overall its a good copy though! (except that annoying upside-down emblem)

Haywire, How much you got the key for?

You can use a sharp knife after it is very tedious.

Dremel tool is nice to have.

I used a electric drill. Just use a bottle cap. Flatten it and cut a small groove at the edge. Find the centre of the cap. Make a hole and secure it with a 3mm bolt and voila, you have a cutting blade.
It will look something like an umbrella.

It worked quite well when I was DIY the angel eye.
