Cold start : Engine dies off after moving 1/2 meter

Hello guys..Have some issue here hope u can give some helpful opinion.. few days ago i started my car engine and it turned on without any problem but when i try to drive shortly after the cold start engaging the gear and step on the pedal the car only managed to move forward only half meter short and engine dies off immediately without warning. i then restarted the engine, also without any problem and manage to drive a little longer this time i think around 3 meters before the engine died again..the same situation repeated two more times before i decided to just start the engine and let it idle to see if it dies again.Amazingly the engine idles at 600-700rpm without dying which i then decided to test drive to see if the engine dies but it ran smoothly until now..i never face situation like this before and is still wondering what may cause the problem but i'm suspecting the fuel pump. is it the symptom of fuel pump going kaput guys? or is it symptom of other engine issues? pls help me any opinion and advise is highly appreciated :smile: Just don't want my machine to let me down on busy traffic or it'll be PITA

Hi Bro,

Most likely is the Fuel Pump is giving way soon. Leave it idle it will not die off as the engine does not need so much fuel compare to driving. U can test by ram your car to 7000rpm or nearby to the red zone when in N position. U see whether it have choke choke feeling.

Nowsday New Fuel pump is only cost RM500 and Chop shop one is RM300. I have one used one for sale.

Cheers... i had faced same problem like yours. My problem was solved by replace fuel filter. It cost me RM150.00
Just follow Kelvinjb advise, ram your car and see what happen. If engine die i believe it was fuel filter. Or more worst fuel pump. thks

Hi Bro,

If it is a M43 Fuel Filter, it cost only RM80 per piece. RM150 inclusive of labour. Still damn expensive. That is a very simple installation. Maybe DIY. Haha

My problem now solved..my mechanic diagnosed a clogged fuel filter and I went straight to the spare parts and purchased KNECHT brand fuel filter for M43 which cost me RM45..may I know what brand of fuel filter both of you are using?

It is that Brand. But double check there is a few type, one is longer that fix just nice for m43. What year is your E36?

Mine is '96 and use the longer one which is 26cm in length with part no. 13 32 1 740 985...
