Going to paint my car. Will probably go for Jet Black II. Got a few questions for all the painting sifu's...I understand that there will be a clear coat over it... is that standard or do you have to specify with the painter? How many coats do they spray? only one or more? When you say Glasurit, is that the base colour or the clear coat?Any help is greatly appreciated.

c'mon Kevster!
Give us the lowdown.......
All the nitty gritty details!

As far as I know, Glasurit (or ICI or Dupont) refers to the brand of paint itself. Don't know if they make the lacquer (clear coat) as well...

The lacquer is what protects the paint!
Without it........
I assume it's standard procedure.Never had to ask for it specifically..

Here's an extract from Kevster's Meguiars post

** What is clear coat paint?

Today, over 90% of all factory finishes are clear coated. A clear coat finish is a multi-layer paint system comprised of a primer, a base coat (the pigment color of your car), and a clear coat. Although a clear coat does protect the base coat, it is very sensitive to scratches and swirl marks because of its clear, non-pigmented layer that allows light to reflect through it. Clear coat paints require special care and should never be treated with harsh abrasive waxes or rubbing compounds, unless you are an experienced detailer using proper equipment.

** Can a clear coat oxidize?

Most modern car finishes consist of a base coating that contains the color, topped with a protective clear coat that is designed to keep the pigmented paint from oxidizing. This outer clear coat adds UV protection that helps prevent the sun's rays from drying out the base paint. Oxidation was an obvious problem ten or so years ago because colors quickly faded. Now that outer layers are usually clear, oxidation is less obvious, yet it still occurs. The sun dries out top paint layers and natural oils are lost. If these oils aren't replaced, the paint oxidizes and the surface gradually becomes duller and duller.

Hope that helps!

I been looking around at black car these days and it seems that those without clear coat paint looks a lot duller.

I assume that means that it is not a standard procedure...

Does this means that I have to specifically specify it? Does all paint shops use clear coat? :dunno: :dunno:

Those cars with a duller finish could just be a cars with worn out clear coats. Never been polished or waxed or given any sembelance of care or maintainence.....

I could be wrong, but IMHO, I think it's highly unlikely that any paint shop would NOT spray on the lacquer as the final layer, especially in with our climate and environmental conditions!

Just call up a few shops for quotes and ask them what is included in their cost.....

To answer your questions:

All paint systems today are clearcoat systems unless stated otherwise.

2K paint is a system that consists of 2 components: (a) base coat(color) and (B) clearcoat.

The clearcoat serves two functions (1) To provide gloss and depth and (2) protect the base coat as the clearcoat from reputable companies have UV inhibitors in them.

Single stage paint (no clearcoat) can look better and outshine 2K systems but are extremely sensitive and require a lot of care.

Glasurit is a reputable manufacturer that produces premuim quality paint. When a painter claims to use Glasurit, check that all components( putty, hardener, thinner, primer, base coat, clear coat) are all from Glasurit.

Be careful as 98% of painters DO NOT use complete Glasurit components as the substitute some components(esp thinner) with local ones as it gives them a healthier profit margin.

Also, Glasurit does provide warranty against their paint quality. Check with your painter.

Hope this helps.

So these days, the normal paint shops uses Single stage paint or 2K paint? :dunno:

Do you know of any painter that uses 100% Glasurit components?
How much is the cost to paint an E39?

How much difference is Glasurit paints in terms of lastability and proneness to scratches and chips?

It is safe to say that 90% of all paint shops are using the 2K system.

Try to 'google' TOYO INK as the are the agents for Glasurit in Malaysia or go to the Glasurit site. They will be your best resource in locating a painter that uses 100% Glasurit.

The cost varies from painter to painter but expect to pay up to RM5k.

The answer to your last question is this:

1) It is the original paint used for BMW and MB in Germany.

2) It is one of the best paint you can buy .

3) It depends on how you look after your car.

4) All the above also depends on the skill and honesty of the painter.
