Hello Gentlemen,

I'm hoping to get some good advice from the e34 veterans here.

My car has been burning oil at a rate of 4 liters per 5000KM and I have been wanting to get it looked at. Now a friend of mine is going to germany for a week and he's willing to get me some stuff from there. The big question is; is it possible to tell before hand what parts are required for an overhaul job, especially a bottom overhaul? Or does the engine need to be disassembled to get an idea.

I did a top overhaul about a year ago and the problem wasn't solved. This time my mechanic says that the rings need to be changed. At the time he checked the cylinder walls and they had no issues. Does that mean that I don't need to use over-sized rings?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Thank you maxion for the link,

The problem is that different sizes of the gaskets, rings, etc (standard and oversized). Like the crank shaft bearing shells here (bit.ly/1n3pN8F). Not sure if there is a way to tell which is going to fit.

btw exact part can be check by your car model such as e34 auto or manual 520i, 525 etc.... Yours are local spec? Maybe can check from the VIN number to.. That the way you will know what size for your crack shaft bearing etc. I have less knowledge about engine part... as for me how do I order part are simple... ust mention my engine model such as M50b20... So they will know it... others spec are... Non Vanos, 24v, Manual Transmission... Well germany are BMW birth place... just said what engine model maybe they know what suitable part for u since they are expert of it... Cheers!

in my opinion some parts are better bought from here as they could be about the same price as in germany too.... try getting hold of some realible spare part shop ...

Time for the new heart....... :listen:
I hope not!

I would love to pay for doing a proper bottom overhaul. But can't trust any of the crooks (mechanics) to do it. I already paid a healthy sum to address this issue. At the time the mechanic suggested I change the valve seals., etc. I ended up changing the head. Now I think it needs a ring change. But I have ran out of mechanics :)

I prefer to fix the current motor than put a half-cut one which will cost me more and is pretty risky.

I think the link to good workshops could help you in deciding on a good reputable and trustworthy workshop which the veterans here visits.

I myself have just decided my choice of workshop in my last visit to KL recently.
