I am thinking of buying a used vehicleYear 2002 -Bmw X5Year 2003 -S280 MercedesBoth are selling around the same price:party: Although they are both quite different in a sense one is SUV and the other a saloon, I really liked them both:questionmark: Some work pals told me Bmw is really hard to sell later on. And it is terribly expensive to mantain. Some told me the Mercedes S class is cheaper to mantain except for their airmatic suspensionI would appreciate any comments by owners:67:

Bro, Believe Me For Once, Bmw X5 Is Much Cheaper To Maintain Than Mercs280.

Sell your X5 in Sabah or Sarawak... value there is higher as roadtax is much lower and they need 4x4 more

In terms of maintenance, BMW is cheaper. In terms of resale value, Mercedes is better. Not because of the 3 pointed star but because generally a sedan will retain a higher resale value than any 4X4 or SUV. If I were you, I'd go for the X5 because I like the car even though the fuel consumption is higher than the Merc.

William,

Since you are asking about resale value for used sample, wouldn't calculating the depreciation for both used model will get you an idea? Here, let me help you. Take original price minus the current used price, and you should be able to compare which one depreciate more than another, right?

So, please do share with us your findings and decision. Good Luck.

Go for X5 u wont regret it.

Why the X 5? If you don't mind bro, share with others like me too. Btw, Ah Meng is my name.

I have a E39 bmw 523i 1999. Was quite happy with my car until a friend asked me to join him up to Genting in his 528. It is more powerful and graceful to drive (almost like a Mercedes Benz). The 523i is not graceful/relaxed at all for long distances.

I became disatisfied driving my own car ever since.
I changed tyres to michelin PP2.
Also the absorbers. Lowered the springs. Then brought the springs back to original height. Still not happy. I also found the e39 528 to be better insulated in terms of road noise than my own e39 523i.

Now thinking of trading my car for a brand new Camry 2.4  (rm170,000) maybe. Performance wise is questionable but at least it is way quieter than what I have now.

But my wife likes suvs such as Mercedes ML320 and Toyota Fortuner 270.

As soon as she met up with a datuk friend 's wife on mahjong day, she was brainwashed into asking me X 5 so many times.

Is this a good choice? I thought X 5 had many troubles? No? Yes? :thefinger:

I tried the current e60 523 and found it to be slightly better than my own car only. Looks of course is terrific but thats all.
For around rm220,000, there are a few 2003 e60 models I can find.

dear ah meng aka cicakman, to explain to u why X5 is :top: :

1. It handles like a sedan car coz it comes with self leveling suspension on top of that go for the sport package where u get the sport suspension and u will fell alot of difference in terms of handling. Cornering is very gud.
2. Maintenance wise- cost of course is more expensive than any japs but its worth evry penny of it coz u will enjoy the car ( very subjective lar )
3. Car insulation is verygud in X5 compare to camry and audi ( coz i owned b4 )
4. Fuel consumption= quite high for me coz i alwaz tekan until 6500rpm (redline ), but uu will fell the pick up very garang one lar.
5. X5 is a 4WD, rain or shine and corners it wont fail u.
6. Comfort ? hmmmm... coz mine is sport suspension, a bit stiff but handling wise is gud. Overall comfort rating is 4/5 star for me.
7. My car does not face many problems, only the steering rack, AFM sensor, and Pneumatic suspension (bola) i had change b4 and for these kind of car i consider the parts price is reasonable.

Thats for now, believe me X5 is a gud choice. The best is u go n test drive ur self and fell the difference. U can test drive it @ sakura auto at cheras auto city . I know the boss. PM me for the number.

The only X5 model that makes sense is the 2003 facelifted 3.0d. It is very frugal and lots of torque, up to 500Nm. The 3.0i IMHO is underpowered. In auto mode, the transmission tends to kick down especially when the car is heavily loaded with fuel. The fuel consumption for the 4.4i and the 4.8i is not much different from the 3.0, provided you don't drive the car everyday. For a daily use, 3.0d is the best.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. Seems that the fuel consumption between the 3.0i and 4.4 is not that much different either on paper, so the 3.0i doesnt look like a sensible option (in my opinion)

Another option is to get a prefacelift diesel and get it chipped to increase HP and torque to bring it on par with the facelift?

thanks for the advice

I tried the x5 yesterday in mofaz. 2002 model. It seem just as good a the ML320 (2002 model)around corners but feel harder(uncomfortable) for some reason. Is it the tyres? I asked the salesman but he doesnt know.

He also showed us a Toyota Alphard. To me it looks to much of a dolled up van.
If I am to take the new E60, I would not choose the 523 at all. It may look the same as the 530 but driving the 530 simply makes it more exciting when driving and also seem quieter inside the cabin.

The price difference from the X5 is not so much anyway. I really like the X5 but the hard feeling for long distances has put me off somewhat.:hmmmm2:
