I need a bit of exeperience sharing and opinions before I go to see my mechanic.... Lately I noticed that the Aux fan working very seldom. It used to kick in everytime the AC is switched on. Nowadays, it only ever switch on when the AC is set to the lowest setting AND only after it has ran for awhile. Even so it run only for a few seconds. The AC is still producing very cold air though. Could this be a sign of imminent failure of the Aux fan? Or is there some kind of sensor that is not working properly? As I understand it the Aux fan is designed to switch on whenever the AC is on or when the engine temperature exceeded a preset value. Please offer your view, experience or opinion....

I think there is a thermostat which kick start the aux fan once a certain preset temperature is achieved. My E39 occasionally have similar problem like yours. Brought it to Naidu but he couldn't detect the cause yet due to shortage of time. Read somewhere another fella rectify his problem (appear to be for the moment) by changing the thermostat sensor. But watch out for engine overheating when the aux fan doesn't run. Better bring it to a good air cond specialist sooner than later.

Anyone experienced this before?

The aux fan has two speeds. It runs on 1st speed most of the time. When tempreture reaches a certain higher level, the thermo switch (located behind the grille colse to the aux fan) will activate the 2nd speed.

Most competent mechanic and a/cond specialist can trace and rectify this problem.

Thanks guys. The thing is the fan used to kick in everytime the AC is switched on. I will bring it in to my mech. soon. Thanks.
