managed to find out the cause of it? The gearbox should easily last beyond 100k on the clock

Hi Juan,

Sorry did not mean to scare u guys....actully i have posted this before..........dunnolah quiet scary rite........i nearly wanted to sell of my car too at one point................

they did not find out the root cause as he did not change it at AB.....AB i think quoted him abt 25k....so he took it to a workshop in Jalan Ipoh.....and changed it for abt 10k.................

talk about the devil guys, i just changed my transmission fluid when i did my last engine oil change, and since then i feel that my transimission not really smooth, recently i got experience that my gear box stucked at 2nd gear....

Did the mechanic use the recomended ATF for your tranny? Is it a full change(flush) or just a partial change?

where did u do it man?.............

maybe should start listing out all our experiences from he ATF change ......i.e car model, millage, and where (service centre) it was dne.....

just a suggestion :D

aiyoh then how la . willie how is your tranny now , see la now got people change and now got problem.

it is a partial change i think, mine ride is E36 318i, yr 1999, i changed the transmission oil during my last engine oil change, which is about 10,000km back at about mileage of 170,000km....

my mechanic said that my gearbox required a auto repair kit, not sure what was that.... he said it about 3000+ , max 4k including labour fee blar blar blar..... somemore i changed my radiator electrical fan yesterday......

Lifetime ATF oil ?

The statement is true if "lifetime" means up until the period where the gearbox kaputs.. and you buy another one. So soon it becomes like a consumer product like your PC power 450W power supply - once a component inside that metal box fails you just buy another one.

Difference is that one is RM50 and the other like, what,.. RM20,000 ?

Mine is a ZF4HP22 auto which was rebuilt in Oct 04.... was advised by auto specialist to change oil every 30k recommended Dexron 3 no specific brand (it can be BMWs if you want).

Mine is due already and I will go back to them to do the change..... I figured if they rebuilt my gearbox I should also go to them for oil change service etc.... peace of mind I guess.

FYI generally speaking its the heat of our climate that kills autos.....

I think that is your problem due to different fluid mixture. Try getting it flush 100%.

Does e34 year 91 need ATF oil change ?

Downshift from 3rd to 2nd is very rough and can hear "sound" ...............

Is it time to ask for hospitalisation again ? :)

Dudes generally speaking signs of auto about to pack up are the following:

-stays in 1st for a very long time before eventually upshifting;

-stays in 1st and refuses to upshift;

-stays in 1st and refuses to upshift and when it decides to upshift it does so violently;

-creeping forward when in neutral;

-complete loss of drive;

-gears slipping; and

-colour of ATF - it should be red/pink/clear.

There may be more.... and the above are indications only. Some may experience all of the above or a combination of indications.... my suggestion is use it until it dies.... there should be enough warning - the first three items above are very clear indications IMHO.... matter of time only...

Solutions:

-ATF flush - some say to buy time.....may help but some say waste of money (not cheap when u using a few bottles of dexronIII ...more if u insist on using synthetics like redline or that purple brand thingy... a good quality DexronIII is always advisable tho...;

-take care of it in the first place - regular change of fluid (say 30k ... feel free to disagree. My info came from auto specialist. I am not an expert); or

- get it rebuilt.... or recond off the shelf(if available).... or buy used (if available)..... or buy new(shite!!)... depends on your pocket and how much risk u can stomach :lol:

On topic looking after the darned things, some things to bear in mind - keep it in D when stationary (use your brake*), avoid putting in P unless actually parking, avoid using N and those with with mutispeed autos e.g. D,3,2,1 use 3,2,1 appropriately... genrally 3 for overtaking** engine braking when descending, 2 and 1 for going up steep inclines.

*there may be an issue here viz your brakes.... it has been said that u should NOT stand on the brakes (say at the lights) after heavy use of the (disc) brakes as this may cause discs to warp thereby causing judde etc..... my 2 cents is this - use common sense. If youve just been to the track this may be something to bear in mind. Similarly, if u just finished cucuk-king a Audi RS4 down the LDP standing on the brakes after that may not be a good idea as well....

** it has been argued that flooring the throttle to force a downshift is better than manually selecting a lower gear.... up to you dudes

The above reflect my opinions on this matter.

Use to involved in AT (Auto Transmission) rebuilt programme for Perdana V6, found out that all V6 AT unit failed because of AT fluid (ATF) brake down due to high temperature built up in the unit (sudden acceleration/deceleration is the cause for ATF temperature built up).

Furthermore if the unit is not service regularly, metal debris will clog valve body, causing it to slip/knock when upshifting/downshifting. AT technician told us that ATF should be replaced at every 20k km, while ATF filter is every 40k km (this apply to V6, not sure for BMW thou).

CK,

Great info dude. In fact it corroborates what my auto specialist told me.... our heat and traffic kills autos. They actually offer a retrofit ATF Cooler for perdana V6's to help prolong gearbox life and performance.

I have read that :

stays in 1st for a very long time before eventually upshifting;

-stays in 1st and refuses to upshift;

-stays in 1st and refuses to upshift and when it decides to upshift it does so violently;

-creeping forward when in neutral;

-complete loss of drive;

are actually symptoms of clogged governor/valve body or something.

I hope the info provided so far has been helpful to members.

But then again, our BMWs have ATF cooler to cool down the ATF.... unlike the Potong cars in which you have to retrofit one....

If you are willing to spend some $$$, get the BMW Lifetime transmission oil. One forumer who has recently replaced his dexron3 with this oil, marvelled at how much smother the gear shifting is compared to previously. Its at least 2-3 times costlier compared to Dexron3. :)

How much does it cost for the BMW lifetime transmission oil ? Can use for E34 ?

Would give it a try................

PROTON also have ATF cooling device, it's underneath the radiator, but is ain't enough to cool down the oil in our climate. Test driven a V6 with scanner show that ATF reached 125 - 130C during hot afternoon on highway driving. Fitted an additional ATF cooler had made it dropped to between 100 - 105C :yes: .

Had personally test drived a problematic V6, the AT suddenly slip while I was doing 100km/h on fast lane at Sri Hartamas, then everything just shut down (engine turn off)!! Very scary!!! Till now still dunno why this problematic AT caused the engine to shut down :dunno: .

Imagine what will happen if u r coming out from T-junction, turning to the right, suddenly ur AT slip, & there is a truck coming towards u :blink: !!!
