My contribution to this Thread.e46 year 99/2000, 105K km on odometer.Non trip tronicSudden gear slips experience. Few days later, total lost of trasmission.Gear box had to be fully rebuild. Took 5 days. Major parts changed are the full gearbox repair kit, used gearbox main casing ( with vertical gear/steps outer ) , washers and gaskets, filter , oils and a huge chunk of workmanship. The number of parts changed came to about 30 plus pcs !TOTAL COST : RM 3800 +FYI, the few pcs of clutch plates have not reached EOL yet bt the physical damage is a crude 3 in diameter steel cup plate with all its sides grinded sharp. Few pcs of pressure spings were bent sideways.Did not expect such failure in an E46 which is for family use and low milage.Question is, am I the isolated case or there are others who had simular experience.OldmanBM

Sorry i cant answer your question but i think the cost is quite reasonable considering it's a BMW ... where did you send your car to if you dun mind me askin? :)

my gearbox did not condamn yet.., luckily i detect a missing brake signal link to the EGS... (the gear-box brain)
during debugging by myself....
IT WILL BE HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE for THE GEAR BOX
especially while braking with your B33w3r, the gearbox still in drive position during braking..
make it over-PRESSURE

Rm3800 quite reasonable,my friend bring it to Auto Bavaria, they charge around RM5K.
I prefer Auto Bavaria if my gear box burn!

thats cheap. my gearbox just did a recon. cost me 8k and done in a week. maybe i got conned ?

mines a E46 ci , 2.2 6cyl , 5 speed box. still got problem now.... haizzz

Rebuilt most of my gearbox in June at Batu Caves. Cost me RM5.5K but it came with a 1 year warranty. They are auto gearbox specialists. Very professional and friendly fellas.

Eterna, did you at least get a warranty?

I have a 320ci convertible 2.2 6cyl.

Gear box rebuild

Just to be sure we are orange to orange, my E46 is first batch ( booked pre launch of E46) some time in 1999 Q4. Its 1.9 and has 4 potts only. Engine is the basic engine, gear shift is NOT triptronic. I got 6 months warranty for this rebuild.

question to eterna22, when you say still got problems, please define as i'd like to pay attention to the tell tale sign before my warranty expires.

Scary experience but the only noticeable damaged part is the cheap looking 3" washer/cup.I believe the main casing that was changed still can be used but was told very difficult to find, thus a recon one was used in my car.Hope they know what they are doing.

BTW, the rebuild was in Penang.

So scary man. Tought transplant the engine is higher cost. Unfortunately this gearbox is more scary. I have i sign of faulty to discuss if anybody could help ut. wonder y when gear shifted to D, P also illuminate and sound of 'dum' heared in between gear 2 to 3. Is it faulty with indicator? And what is the cause of 'dum'? Anyone?

tell tale sign is unable to change gear and when u WOT it feels soft and powerless.... like slipping clutch...

but after much hard driving i think mine feels pretty much normal now again

warranty is for 6 months.

OldmanBM,

what you quote can be said as cheap.
know someone who was charged close to double your amount for a e46 2.5 whose
AT konked at 150K km. he is a careful owner. car was not thrashed.

Joker, care to share more on how you detect the missing link from brake to gearbox EGS? I guess it would probably feel odd when you pressed on the brake pedal?

Long pick head story

:stupid: wow.., that was long story...

FIRST: i though it was normal???,
during starting to drive the car in D position with brake pressed,
(especialy in traffic light and start from parking)
the car just like being pressured,
the car would be ducking (lowered few milimeter) if you look from outside.

NEXT:
Braking while driving near traffic light, the car would behave like very heavy car or
there had grease stained in the brake pad or brake DISC or the disc and pad was worn out???
soo i usually switch to N position when braking, and it improve the braking capability.
and then i go to check the actual bmw braking fact in the www.youtube.com
look for the BMW action movie.., the bmw in the movie behave very good braking capability.:top:

THEN:
i purchase aftermarket ORIGINAL LICENSED OBDII scantool..,
the scantool not fully support my car but can read some of the computer module..,
soo i open the EGS.., and test the brake light signal...,
it show no respond to EGS but good respond to ABS unit....:top:

long story.........:34: :34: :34: :34: :34: :34: :34: :34:

So what's the remedy? Is it just a lose brake-signal wire socket connection at the EGS?

The 1st observation sounds familiar to most cars isn't it (that it would drop a few mm when in D with brake depressed)? I didn't realize that's not normal.

My E39 528 is currently undergoing a complete gearbox rebuilt (180k km mileage). First shop quoted 7k for rebuilt including torque converter but no trottle body. Told best price anywhere. Find cheaper will send there. Found one at 5k so towed the car there. But found out that the first shop has exchange many parts (to faulty parts) when they remove the gearbox even the trottle body was exchange with a non functioning unit knn!!. If I install the gearbox now the car cannot move at all. I was driving the car before I send it in. Only problem was 1st gear slipping. The 1st shop was really unprofessional but what to do.
Currently job completed and waiting for the trottle body. Should be ready soon I hope. Miss driving my UDM sighhhh.

1st shop is my regular mechanic and still they do this. Never ever going back to them.

i just manually join it, it was also a long long pick head story......:stupid:
long long work....

how many people had EGS not respond to the brake signal ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
without the brake signal, it would not create DTC error!!!!

cilakak dem teruk man if that's what they did... and to a regular customer... where are they located? might want to check them out... see whether they add a bit sand with engine oil when service car...

Since you're based in Ampang, go to this place in Pandan Indah called WP Auto. Location is along the small lorong opposite Pandan Indah police station (red caltex signboard). Look for Albert & tell him your problems, pm me if you need his number. Good luck:)
