Are the X-series brakes naturally soft and spongy?

Hello fellow X'bros...I've noticed that the X brakes are spongy and softer than normal. Tested 1 4.4i E53 and the mech said its normal for all X series. Scout around the web throws up the same as well for this model. Is it true? If it is are there any steps to improve? I am kinda use to firmer bite ala my e34/46 but if I am gonna trade in for the X I need to know what I am getting myself into Thanks for any replies...cheers

I have no such feeling on my E53 brakes. It feels the same as my E39 brakes.

If I recall correctly, many years ago i changed something along one of the vacuum lines which improved the brakes on my then E34. it's a round thing with hoses coming and out. Not sure what that thing is called. U can see it when u open the engine hood.
