Customs to auction off unclaimed carsPORT KLANG: About 1,000 imported luxury cars, lying unclaimed for over two years at the Northport and Westport here, will be handed over in stages to the Royal Customs Department. The department will trace the importers and auction off the cars, estimated to be worth about RM500mil, if the importers are not interested in claiming them.Selangor Customs director Roslan Yusof said the department suspected that the importers did not claim the vehicles because they did not have the required Approved Permits (APs) or could not raise the money for the taxes or transport and storage fees.It is understood that charges for storage and transport have accumulated to about RM8,000 per vehicle after more than two years.“According to the law, companies or individuals importing the vehicles lose all rights to them if they fail to claim the cars within four months after entry into this country,” he told reporters after attending a seminar for the Free Trade Zone employees.Roslan said 216 of the luxury cars – Mercedes and Volkswagens – were handed to the department in Friday by the Northport authorities while about 700 more were expected to be handed over by the Westport authorities soon.Customs Director-General Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Hamid, who opened the seminar, later inspected the vehicles imported from Europe, Japan and Korea.Abdul Rahman said he was happy with Port Klang’s performance as it had shown a RM200mil increase in tax collection this year from the RM1.6bil collected during the same period last year.He said the increase was made possible by the innovation and improvement introduced last year that now enabled cargo to leave the port within two-hours.He said the department was currently discussing with the port authorities the possibility of linking their systems to further reduce waiting timemaybe can get a GTI?
