Hello fellow bimmerians, got some query here..Is it normal practice to top up or change aircond compressor oil if the compressor bearing start to make buzzing sound?Need some info regarding this issue. Thank you.Cheers..

hi bro...

not really an expert in this...but if your compressor is starting to make some noise...i think it is time get it checked and if it's still working fine, just have your mechanic service it (perhaps change the receiver dryer too).

I had mine checked because of the compressor noise...then the mechanic told me the noise was because compressor for my E34 was "burnt" inside coz the receiver dryer has not been changed for some time and the liquid that came out was totally black...

hope this helps =)

yes.. it's normal.
i had mine change (dont top up) the compressor oil & freon every 1 years. the mechanic told me that would make my compressor long life.... well i hope thats right :)

until now.. my compressor is running well.. very smooth... :)

hope this help ;)

Do not top up the compressor oil unless there's a leakage or if you change any part for example cooling coil, condensor, piping/hose or compressor.

If you change the compressor, measure the oil from the old compressor & get the amount. Use that amount of the compressor oil for the new compressor. Say if u drain oil from old compressor & u get 80cc, use only 80cc for the new compressor.

Overfill oil compressor will lead to extra load to your compressor, belting, bearing, engine & will effect your fc.

king82,m0nt3r0z4,fahami thanks for your advise really appreciate it..

king82, is the receiver dryer located in the dashboard?how much it cost?

currently my aircond is quite ok i guess. its cold in the morning n evening.but its not cool enough in the afternoon heat (in sunny weather)..moreover whenever i stop at traffic light the air from the blower fell less cold and its only gets cooler when the car is on the move (especially in the afternoon).do anyone know what is the problem?

compressor oil quantity and refrigerant amount shud be referred to BMW technical data. measuring the old oil quantity to determine new oil quantity is not precise since some of them mebbe lost during gas leak or stays inside cooling coil and condenser.

it is important to identify the source of compressor noise since there are several mechanical parts involved. changing the oil won't help eliminating the noise if the bearing beneath the compressor clutch is already worn out (where the drive belt sitting on the pulley). identify which mechanical part was worn out before trying to do any bogus repair.

I think the buzzing sound come from compressor bearing..is it possible to replace only the bearing instead of whole compressor unit?

hi bro...for E34 520i, the receiver dryer is just behind & underneath the low beam headlight. it cost me RM170 to change it.

In my opinion, you should bring your car to your trusted mechanic/ air cond specialist to sort this out as soon as possible. If it is sorted out soon, then you may save some $$ by not having to change to a new compressor. If you do travel to KL, I know the best place you could go to...Naidu... :top:

hey dude ur problem of when u stop at traffic light, the air from the blower fell less cold maybe due to radiator not working well,my mum jap car go tthis probelm when the the car's radiator leak, hope this help!

wht type of e36 do you own?

if 318i (M43 engine) then... you can't replace the bearing... you have to replace whole compressor unit :( (sigh... yes.. its not cheap....)

if M50 engine.... then you can replace only the bearing.. CMIIW

Funny.. My E36 aircon never service or top up gas for 12 years and it still work fine..

No secret lah. It was a CBU so I think they did a good job with the aircon piping work and did not have any leak.

Another thing is to regularly clean or change the micro filter for the aircon. It keep the fins of the AHU from getting dirt struck between them.

If aircon not cold in the afternoon, then it either:-
1. Aircon freon gas is low
2. The cooling fan for the aircon radiator located at the front iis no running at full speed.

As for weak air flow, this problem is due to the dirty microfilter. It located under the steering column. change it.

Thanks Jarance,

I've checked with my mechanic before and he's saying m20b25 year 1990 don come with micro filter, check air cond gas and the guy told me still have enough gas maybe i should check the cooling fan speed.

Thanks alot

I checked and find that your have microfilter. BTW, yours is E30 right?

here is the partlist. just click on the word 'Microfilter" for more detail of the part.
