I am driving a 318 Ci and yes, I do get frustrated at times.

Even when driving spiritedly using the steptronic, you know that the chasis is not even near to being tested. I feels really slow.

However, 80% of the time, it is just perfect. And for the amount I am paying, both for the purchase price and maintenance, there really is no other car that I can think of that come even close.

So my advice is, go for what you can afford. You won't regret it. Between 2000 six cylinder and 2002 four pot, if the cost is similar I would advise to go for the six pot - just make sure the condition, esp the mechanicals is in excellent condition.

Do bear in mind though that about the maintenance, road tax and possible difference if depreciation. For sedan, the bigger engines depreciates much faster than the smaller engines; I expect the same applies to coupe as well although not necessarily.
