Another "smart" move by our "smart" gov.

And who is going to profit the most out of this move? Proton of course.

Like funfer said, if the gov really have our best interest at heart they would have just lowered the import duty for all imported vehicles. Better yet, why not abolish it completely? I think it's high time Proton is weaned off its mothers milk!

I'd rather drive my 15 year old BMW than a 15 year old Proton anytime or even a brand new Proton for that matter!

They have to start listening. It is a matter of saving Proton but the whole ship sinks or lower down import duty but the ship stays afloat.

I really want to believe that their main objective is to get rid of those 60km/h top speed old cars that cause other ppl to potong queue, behave like a smoke generator that often give false alarm to fire dept, sikit-sikit rosak tepi jalan causing massive jams, jalan 50km tapi makan minyak rm50, etc etc. Let's see what they can come up with.

most of the people at work think my E30 is worth less than 5k.. people can be so mean :s:

some people may see this as saving proton. Other auto manufacturers are welcome to do the same as well.

People talk about reducing taxes, but would you know how the govt would compensate with the loss in revenue from that? Do you mind higher taxes? we can go on about whether the money is well spent but that's a totally different issue altogether.

let me clarify, I am not a policy maker. However, I strongly believe there are very intelligent people here behind that wonderful screen and keyboard as most are either running large and successful businesses or anything similar. I am sure there are good proposals out there. Feel free to add and do put it based on the right assumptions after taking into consideration macro and micro factors. TQ. :) cheers.

I just received a couple of text messages from Cycle & Carriage. They are giving 0% interest at the moment PLUS free Sony Bravia TV for those who want to purchase Mercedes Benz. This offer is so un-Mercedes Benz. This is too humble and too low. Normally, this kind of offer comes from Korean makes. This shows that the economy is stagnant. Cycle & Carriage for example, can act up to certain extent. The only way to overcome this is through government intervention. The import duty must be lowered in order to attract more people to make new car purchases.

There are 1 million car that are 15 years old. Honestly, only a small percentage are road worthy.
In fact some of them are hazard to road user due poor brake and engine efficiency.

if the Govt is giving incentive to get rid this type of car, it will save the environment due to air pollution and
people pay less used fuel to travel from A to B. Our oil resource is not going to last forever.

However, the pro of reviving the auto industry is only a short term. The impact on the environment would be
worse when the population of car on the road is double.

Our neighbor country is controlling car population by COE and provide better public transport instead.

Car above 10 years are NOT encouraged on the road when the COE expired.

Rather than trying to generate or sustain automobile industry, the govt should think of better public transport structure for the majority of the public.

But how would your suggestion help Protong? Ada udang di sebalik batu.. :listen:

They must be thinking..

"What u all want? Use your money to help them, u all bising. Pay u all 5k so u all can help them, also u all bising.. "

“The proposal is part of an economic development package worth more than RM5bil to help improve the country’s economic condition,” said Muhyiddin.

Dear Mr Yassin,

Why don't you lower the import duty, say 70% on all imported cars regardless of cubic capacity for this year alone. I am sure many people would love to help improve the country's economy by purchasing new cars such as BMW.

.......that wont solve the issue. The issue here is 'they want to help the malaysian car industry'.

Who on earth do not want new car. Many of us here can buy new protons but they choose to buy 10 year old BMWs or merce....why? because they like the car itself....... but if you do something or everything to make people 'help' the national car industry....now that is the forcing part. That reminds me of a posting here somewhere which means something like this...............if u sell goreng pisang at a stall and u can't get a profit from it u just close the stall....so if u sell new cars and u can't get profit from it what do u do then..?...lol....

And why am I not surprised if he is... affan, u know how to get me if u want ideas....

From the governmnet's point of view, Proton must be protected at all costs. Period. This is no rocket science. But, in this current economic situation we need ideas as close as rocket scientists' ideas. Some ideas might look like going against the Proton Protection Act but there is no harm trying. Some of these ideas also might not be a totally permanent thing. Just for the interim period. When the economy picks up everything can go back to normal. A few things the government must realise is that:

1) Proton's market share is small worldwide. With the introduction of Perodua and Naza cars flooding the market, the market share is getting even smaller especially for domestic market. By helping only Proton the economy can hardly move.

2) The upper middle class segment is the fastest growing segment in this country although not the biggest segment. For the luxury car market, the potential of this segment must not be ignored. The market for Proton already been taken care by the lower middle class segment. Since the prices of goods can hardly go down since the last fuel hike this segment suffers the most. Their purchasing power now is very limited. The only untapped market is the upper middle class people whom I believe are more comfortable buying second-hand and recond luxury cars instead of new ones. They have been delaying their purchases simply because the luxury cars pricing strategy is only for the super rich which, their segment is the smallest at the apex and does not grow as fast as the upper middle class segment.

3) When the economy moves not only the car dealer benefits from this. Other sectors such as insurance and banking will all move. The last thing we want to hear is that our government has to bail out banks using taxpayer's money. Consider this, when an individual has a problem with a bank he or she will be blacklisted and sometimes declared as a bankrupt. When banks in trouble, they will surely have the government to bail them out using the taxpayer's money, possibly using part of the bankrupt person's tax money . Best of all, the bank will not be blacklisted.

errr.... funfer, good input. However, not everyone share's the same view with some parts of government.
this is a big issue because it deals with used car sales, banks, insurance companies, etc.... even other car manufacturers too because a number of them do not want to reduce their price also...
