X5 3.0d engine oil

Hi,My friend just bought 2004 X5 3.0d. He asked me can he use Castrol Edge 5w40 for engine oil service?Advise please.Thanks

For Diesel engine BMW recommends oil that is LL-04 certified which in this case it's Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40.

If i'm not mistaken Castrol Edge 5W-40 is LL-01 certified which is meant for older engine.

What do you mean by older engine? I'm using E90 320i 2005 model. Is it good to use 5w-40 or I also need to use 0w-40?
