Since everyone trying to racun me to improve my power, I was wondering, whats the biggest engine I can use with my gearbox?I've heard that 4-potter gearbox does not match 6-potter gearbox, is that true? If I want to upgrade to a M50 2.5 litre manual with future plans to stroke it to 3.2 litre... what needs to be done? Thanks to all the sifus for your advises in advance!

the extra torque for the bigger cc engine would kill the gearbox in not-too-long a period...

but is it mechanically possible to fit?

I've been in 1.3 satria gearbox with 2.0 litre 4G63T turbo engine cars before... lasted more than 5 years without any problems. Also a supercharged 1.8 gti with over 300Nm of torque... still going strong after 4 years of usage.

do you know the exact model of your gearbox?
if you do get a chance to go under, you can see the stamping code

some 1.8 gearboxes share the same as the 2.0/2.5 counterpart

or better still, pm me your VIN number and i can lookup to see what model gearbox you have, if its stil in the original condition, not transplanted

dan....c!!!told u got many choices in modding mah!!! :nyehehe:

tyke.. where do I find this VIN? Is it on my car registration card or in my engine bay? I can only find the engine & chassis no.

pussy.. thanks for the info! so there are quite a lot of choices indeed :)

By the way, can I maintain my block but use the M42B18 head? Since they are both 4-potters... and sideways selling his... would there be any difference felt from a 1.8 sohc to a 1.8 dohc? Or is it too minimal to notice?

yes the chassis number..

as for the using the M42 head only, not possible. Why? Cos the M40 is using timing belt and the M42 is using timing chain. the mechanism is different although the M42 block is based on the M40 block.

Difference? quite a bit of different...

for the m4x - e36 and m5x -e36 family the bell housing are the same, only length between the larger boxes are different

another peculiar thing about the boxes are the input torque it can take i.e. 200nm for m4x family, 250nm for m5x family,310nm for the e36 m3/328i and 320nm for the m3.2
some newer m4x used the boxes with the same specifications as the 2.5 engines

you can still use the boxes out of the m4x engine with the 2.5/2.8 engines since there are mechanical tolerances , the box will not fail immediately, just that the wear and tear will be faster, ie inner syncros, bearings ,etc

only thing you can use for the m40-m42 is the oil pan.......i think....!

m42 sifus can add in more info

btw , IMHO the m40 to m42change in an e36 body wouldnt feel as much of a difference as if it was in an e30.....

will need to look at your other VIN number as the one you gave doesn't register anything.......

Dan, you cannot just swap heads. The intake system for the M42 is completely different. The wiring for the M42 is different, as is the ECU, aair-cond compressor, alternator, power steering pump, etc, etc.

The only 2 items you can use over frm the m40 is the oil-pan and transmission.

The m40 and m42 management systems are COMPLETELY different.
