Hello there, I'm trying to get a medium range 5" set of front speakers. Does anyone know of a respectable shop in the PJ area that offers this. There are plenty of stereo shops in town but I've never delt with any and don't want to be taken for a ride. also don't know much about those shops that carry the various speaker brands. So any suggestion for a set of speakers (brand). Preferable around 500 + ringgit. Thanks.

500 bucks should get you a decent pair of speakers. I paid 700 for my alpine type-R, quite happy with it.

RedZ4,

You're looking at some decent entry level speakers from Alpine, Pioneer, Hertz and a few more at that price range. Just be sure to get them from a reputable shop - ask Bundy for some suggestions, la! Whatever you do, just don't get anything from those losers on Lelong.com who are all happily peddling fake wares all over.

Cheers,
VaN.

Ah Lian,

Unfortunately, I have nothing to offer him la! Summore 5 1/4 inch units, wor - got rid of all my old ones after switching to the current 6 1/2 mid drivers. In fact, all my so-called 'Nice' toys are mostly sold liao. Now putting up a simple, back-to-basic system for my daily commuting, la! You'll see it when I put the details up a little later ...

P.S - Where have all YOUR nice toys gone to, aah ? :p

Cheers,
VaN.

my nice toys are sitting on the floor in the living room. ha ha ha ha ha!
but no 5" ones. :p

RedZ4,

PM sent with tel and add of my installer....

Are you upgrading from standard z4 speakers?? Honestly rm500 ringgit won't upgrade much maybe entry level Alpine type x's or r's maybe or DLS supreme's maybe.

Van,

What new toys? must see this...

...

Samdol,

You'll be surprised with what RM 500 buckeroos can buy you these days, la! With most of the established brands outsourcing or moving their manufacturing to low cost areas, prices of car audio gears have come down a fair bit. For that budget or with a wee bit more topped up you could grab - Alpine Type S, Pioneer TC series (I think), DLS B or Ref series, Focal Access, MB Quart DSD, Hertz ES and others along the same line. Look for some old stock clearance sales happening from time to time as well.

New toys ? Not really la ... just gathering a bunch of ol school stuff lying around for a simple system. Sold my Genesis Four Channel and "Leased" out my Genesis Dual Mono to another pal. Broke already, ma !!!

"Lease" Hmmm sounds like a good idea... think i do it for my old toys too!:)

Sorry What i meant to say is he wants to upgrade to 5" front speaker set only so i think his choices limited for the improvement if he is not powering with amps or subs... so that means he is in the market for set of a good 2/3 way components speakers to improve sound so that makes his choices limited in a way.... granted old stock alpine is going for peanuts now. If he was upgrading his whole setup then yes rm500 is enough more than enough actually for just front speakers.

Anyway thats what i think he wants dunno what exactly redZ4 looking for actually guessing that he just wants to improve the sound only without new HU, amp or sub.Since he has a z4 i think when he has the top down on the z4 he probably can't hear anything clearly so he wants to improve that dept. only.

My recommendations is Alpine 2 way component hopefully the z4 front is deep enough to fit the type S. I had before an sps - ??? (don't remember the model no.) for my sisters car it was the only upgrade to her factory standard system and it was such an improvement... cost was around rm600++ with cables and install.

On another note i heard blaupunkt is getting rid of old stocks anybody know of any news about that? :D

Guys,
This is not for my Z4. The speakers on the Z car is fine, its for my other car... and not the E30.

Vanquish, I'll be looking out for some of those more well known brand name front speakers before I upgrade. Right now, I'll take my time and not rush in cause I don't want to get something that I might regret. So getting your advise and suggestions would be helpful.

I just have to bear with the crap quality sound for now.

redz4,

are you planning to add amps.... or is there an existing amp?

the reason being if no amp is used to drive the speakers, then you have to look for speakers which are efficient. (95% or more).... there are many great speakers out there which cant run off the head unit (with the internal amp).... cause the sound crap.

Thats what i assumed... thats why i wondered how to upgrade z4 which is already good with just rm500 ringgit budget only.

My choices... only experience is with these only actually.

Alpine or DLS

Good clarity with broad ranges basically jack of all trades master of none!
...

thanks for the tip. I'll look into Alpine or DLS. but for around 500, i might be laughed at by the stereo shop guy.

I'm not planning on adding amps. Just running off the head unit and what ever came with the car so no need for an overkill set of speakers.

Wise word from a Enlightened ICE Master .... be careful my friend - you wouldn't wanna blow your cover, would you ? :p

Redz4, take your time to shop around and find something you like. But Ah Lian is right about using HU's amplification on even average speakers. They always end up making them sound a lot worse than what they are capable off. In fact, by just adding an small amplifier to stock speakers will make them sound a lot nicer just for simple listening.

Regards,
VaN.

If you dont mind 2nd hand units you can try to look out at this forum... I have seen some good offer there.. however, you have to beware of some fakes (even 2nd hand stuff). But you still need an amp to drive the speakers.
