dear sifus & gurusthe hot weather is really takin a toll on my car's performance especially since its supercharged so lot of it depends on the quality ie temperature of the air goin in the engine. i've installed heat shield to my open top filter last week and performance gain was tremendous. am thinkin of goin one step further by changing my hood to vented ones. understand that it will help dissipate most of the hot air out of the engine bay when going above certain speed. questions:1. what kind of performance increase can i expect?2. will the rain go though the vented area and damage my engine?also, i notice there is an insulator underneath my stock hood. wonder if that would help if being removed? IMO the purpose is only to shield the sound and heat from the engine which i dont need in fact would be better if the heat gets dissipate faster through the hood and if my car sounds louder! :). would appreciate your comments before i proceed. thx...

my opinion..

1. dun do it unless it's properly done by bmw i.e. e92m3..
cos the design of the m3 is to collect air inside. funny way, cos the engine need to exhale hot air..

2. the design of the car is calculated to dissipate heat below and aid proper air flow from the front grilles into the rad and onto the engine to exit below the firewall...by adding ventilation above will upset the flow..but hot air rises up..

3. upset the cd factor during driving at high speeds , maybe wild guess..

4. other way, it might be for cosmetic purpose or looks but serve no purpose.

5. one member has done it on his car, an e30, but also having the hood adjusted upwards.. he claims it does a lot of justice..

last, if it's done tastefully, it will look nice, but i wont be wanting the e60 to be looking too ah beng. the car is nice as it is..

regards.

Like this VORSTEINER vented M5 hood very nice ma..

Or can try with fender grill first.. make sure its a functional fender grill. This one u don't have to worry about rain. :D

Instead of "vent it out", you should find a way to draw more fresh air into/near air filter.

Gruppe M Ram Air Kit + the VORSTEINER vented M5 hood = good!!

my other car's vented hood does have a lot of heat coming out of it, even at idle at traffic lights, i can c the wavey kinda air emitted from the vents. water does get it somehow, but that is a small sacrifice, no?

u could expect a dustier engine, and maybe some fading as the plastics inside the engine are not UV protected. frequent washing & protecting the engine compartment will prevent this!

bro i seriously dont mind my car lookin like the one in your pic...one of the best lookin e60 IMO but would probably cost a bomb for the transformation. do u by chance have a pic of vorsteiner hood on a blue e60 w mtech bodykit? :)

Same issue, last time was on Sc and bought the vorsteiner hood to dissipate the heat... Well, cant really felt anything the vorsteiner hood is lighter than the stock, no issues of rain problems even when pouring, only things is ur engine bay get really dusty.

anyone know exactly how much the standard e60 hood weighs and how much a CF hood such as the one from Vorsteiner weighs? if i'm not mistaken, the standard hood is quite light as well due to it's aluminium constuction rite?

the Vorsteiner hood looks like it's especially made for the V10 in the M5,looking at the powerdome and also the rear exit louvres..so while it works to dissipate hot air out of the M5's engine bay,i wonder if the same applies when use on inline-6 engined cars..

wonder if there are any that is made to work with inline-6 cars.
