I managed to get my hands on the new 2008 Navigation DVD today (currently retailing at RM 2000++) and thought I'd record my initial thoughts. The new DVD plugged straight in, with no firmware incompatibility issues. Once I put the DVD in, the system immediately picked up that there was a new version and advised that the car needed to be turned off for 5 minutes.Once the system had reset itself there were no issues using the new version. All my saved addresses were still available.I have not had much of a chance to play around with the detailed maps, but I have noticed the following:- Coverage for Malaysia includes an expanded range in Klang Valley & JB, and Melaka / Penang being included in the new version. This comment is based on a comparison of the country maps on the back cover the 07-1 and 08-1 DVD's.- The Information classifications have been tidied up, e.g. mosques / temples / churches are now classified under Community Centres rather than Places of Interest. There are also some new classifications, e.g. Business Addresses. However, the Business Address classification only has 6-7 entries, e.g. Menara Citibank. Two of the locations were for DaimlerChrysler, so not sure if someone at the GPS vendor was taking the piss - The "Junction" feature now works in the 08 version. For example you can now enter the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail / Jalan Ampang as a location. However, the "Building Number" function still does not workI will continue to post more thoughts as I have a chance to play more with the new version. If anyone has any specific questions / scenarios for comparison, please let me know.CK

... until an average Ah Beng on the street can afford an M-Sport.. :p

For RM2000+, I would rather get a lens for my DSLR. It is just too expensive.

I did went and complain abt the 07 DVD then they said got new one which is 08 and cost rm2000. I didnt buy it. But later on Sapura sent it to me for free.... :)

Sapura sent it for free? That's really generous of them. Would every SA send it for free?

I fully agree with Peanut, that BMW Malaysia should reduce the cost of upgrading significantly. Afterall, the cost of developing the maps are fixed. The more they are installed in the BMW cars, the lower is the cost of navigation system per car.

BMW Malaysia should look into this seriously as I believe it will have repurcussion to the BMW ownership experience one have.

When I bought my 530 last month I did ask about the Navigation DVD. Was told that it will be given free when the new version available.

hi ck,

Thanks for sharing your info with us,seems like they have upgrade few things on the 08 map...but Rm2k is a hack of a price,i wonder,do they make exchange or trade in the 07 version for free...?

Nope!!! it has to be bought!

I just ring up Lee Motor Alor star, according to them the 08 version is rm2k+.:burnout:i wonder is there anyone out there can burn this CD...

Been playing around with my 08 CD over the weekend and noticed that it works better and faster than the 07 version. There are pretty up-to-date listings for restaurants and such places, and the listings have been tidied up as CK said.

Given that the base maps and info are quite detailed, and that the CD is compiled in Germany, and seems bug free, I think the RM2k is a justified price for a new purchase. However what BMW should consider is a discounted price for upgrades by previous owners, much like the way the IT software industry does it.

Here's something for the Club to consider taking up, ALBundy and JPB! :driver:

I must admit that I do not subscribe to copying software, but at >RM2000 this gets to be very tempting! I really think BMW are doing a great big disservice to their customers. I would like to emphasise that the data is obtained from a 3rd party (most likely Navi & Map) and the cost could have been spread amongst all users and thus lowering the end user price. If they priced it properly, this would also attract more users and more people would upgrade. The major problem I have with the price is that the data is not even accurate. So why am I paying so much for data that is wrong and almost obsolete the minute you get it. I can personally attest to errorneous data because I have tried the 07 version to indicate how to return home and the system will give me a route that is not correct (even if I allow for it to take a longer and different route than what I would normally take). I checked out the pricing in different countries - in Australia its about AUD350 (~RM1100), Singapore its SGD 870 (~Rm1850 a little high), Euro price is Euro$180, US price is US$165. I think demand has an impact on pricing, but not super profits of about RM1000 especially when you compare it with competing products. This is a chicken and egg situation isn't it? The more expensive it is the fewer people will buy it. As a comparison, it is possible to buy a Gamin GPS unit for around RM1500 and the data update costs RM350! The Gamin device has a lot going for it and it is also portable. I know a lot of people all over the world who swear by it. And when the iPhone makes it to M'sia, GPS comes with it for next to nothing (it may have limited features but who really needs them all). We will see whose strategy is correct then.

What BMW should be doing is to have a subscription service for the data disk. The data needs to be updated 2 or more time a year (especially in Malaysia where new roads seem to be springing up all the time) and if priced correctly, they will get a long term income stream without doing much work.

if someone have the original copy, am sure we can figure a way out to make it available....

btw...the DVD -08 sucks, the data is all wrong especially on small towns.

Not sure if garmin data is better.

Yeah RM2K+ is way too expensive. I won't even consider buying it at that price. BMW should come up with alternative methods of getting car owners to continue to update their Navigation DVDs. Such as an annual subscription at a decent price, similar to those of many software packages. swcng2001's idea of a subscription service is good. Otherwise, I'd rather try my luck at the pasar malam (

I have try copy the new DVD. Can work... Now looking the good quality DVD tu burn it down.
