My 335i recently produce whining sound when accelerating around 1.5K RPM onwards.

Is the turbo going anytime soon? Did some research, some say its normal, some say its time is up....

If the turbo unit does breaks down, can still drive the car?

Replace new one or rebuilt the old one?

Your comments appreciated...

It is not normal for a standard 335i to have a loud turbo whine...a rattling wastegate is quite common tho...if your problem is severe enough, the sensor will flag error codes 30ff etc. on your idrive...best is to get your car checked at a reputable 335i workshop...the turbos can be rebuilt at a fraction of a price...a couple of well known turbo shops in KV can do this...

Thanks silverbullet

No error codes just yet... so just use it first... but confirm is from turbo...

If you go fast enough, you wont hear the whine..... hehehe....

If no codes, don't worry.... just drive!!!

btw, I've got a JB4 for sale if you're interested. :)

its a sign already, if you are unsure..take it to specialist workshop and check the turbine wheel play, if too much play, rebuild it or buy new one if you can afford it

I can tell you that to take out and inspect the turbos, won't be cheap. It's stuck in the narrowest place in the engine where you won't be able to take it out without tilting the engine. My last mechanic took down the whole engine for easy access.

My advice, start saving for an RB turbo and enjoy the car now as long as you can. Rebuilt turbos are okay (costs at least 3k) but it won't be a permanent solution. New oem turbos costs around 6K each, and that was before the ringgit drop.

If you think the car is powerful now, wait until you put in a piggy back.

No codes. No worries.

No need to take out the turbo for wheel play inspection, just remove the pipe which connect the turbo to the intercooler, hope it helps

Wah poison!!! But save money for repair works for now...

I was thinking about rebuilding the turbo rather than replace a new unit.

How long a turbo unit last? 100k km?

Wait a minute guys, isnt it normal to hear your turbo spooling up in the form of a whining sound? I have 320d n it has the same sound around that rpm range. Pickup trucks i have driven also have the same turbo whine. Need some enlightenment here

Interesting to see different feedbacks here...

For a 335i...yes you won't be able to access the turbo without tilting the engine, most mechanics have to take down the whole engine for easy access.
For a 335i...there is no DPF..lol...lmao
For a 335i...the turbo whine is not so loud unless you have upgraded turbos...or with high-flow air filters will also produce wheezing sound but this is not from turbos

John...my advise is better start talking to the right ppl...

hint: Get the JB4 from wideawake and u will get free consultation..he has gone thru a lot :)

Johnyg,
You should join the 335i gang for an earlier Sunday breakfast drive. Then we can talk more. I've taken down the turbos twice already. Not a cheap affair.

And to see if you can keep up with the pack :)

Not this weekend lah... To gather the guys also need to tell 2 months in advance. Sometime before raya haji lah. Haha

Need to see if the GtR can keep up with a certain M3 also....

there is a very distinct noise from any turbo. if it is whining.. its fine.. but if there is another some caused by worn bearing. not everyone .. not even every mechanic knows to differentiate.

question, is there any drastic changes in power delivery? if bearing koyak.. power is drastically reduced. if it aint broken.. dont touch it as there will be a lot of aux stuff u got to do if u take out the turbo regardless the turbo is fine or not
