Hi Guys,Has anyone experienced this before..... referring to this symbol (the one with the exclaimation symbol surrounded by gears)This used to happen to my E46 once in a while but lately it has been happening almost everyday! I got my car checked and it showed that the stall speed sensor needs replacing. I got it changed and the problems still persist!! Then my mechanic (Ah Meng MSpeed, USJ) suggested to update the software but that too is useless. This problem usually happens when I am idle (car not moving during jams or at the traffic lights) and I usually "reset" it by putting the car back to "P", set the handbrake, off both air cond and radio and then off the engine. I will then start again after about 10 seconds and the car is back to normal until it happens again. When the indicator lamp is on, the car is still drivable but it seems to be stuck in one gear. When the indicator lamp comes on, I noticed the the revs are inconsistent (up and down between 500 to 700). Usually under normal conditions my revs are at 650 rpm on idle. So I was wondering, if anyone out has faced this same/similar problem. I am hoping that you could guide me with your experience. Thanking you guys in advance.

Hi Bro taggnas, mine is e36, last time my gearbox indicator also light up permanently.
But my problem different case with you, my car started jerking whenever the gearbox
indicator light up. Sent to mechanic for further inspection then after done the diagnosis
he has found out the problem was the battery not very good to pump in enough supply
to the AFM. After changed the new battery, everything became back as per normal
condition...

I read in my E90 user manual when that indicator light up it is a sign that the car has shifted to Limp-Home Programme. It has something to do with the auto transmission component failure but it still alllow you to drive to the workshop.

It's indeed in "Limp home mode" what's d milage of ur car. Could b gearbox problem if d milage is high. Ur car is probably permanantly engaged in d 4th gear 2 enable u 2 get home or 2 a workshop. Had this problem twice b4, d latest incident being appx. 5 mths ago (the gearbox fault symbol) But after switching off d engine & restart, d porblem disappeared.

I suggest you go to M-scope in batu caves (gearbox specialist) coz i heard alot of good review about them being fast and good in troble shooting

takes a bit of luck sometimes when it comes to fixing such problem. warning indicator might be the same but actual cause of problem could be different.

Thanks for you suggestions and thoughts, guys! I hope that I will have the time to go to M-Scope in Batu Caves. Am currently based in Penang.

You are so right is staying that, Erica24! I hope that my problem is as simple as changing the battery like Azam318 did and the problem is fixed.

Still baffled and don't know what to do at the moment!

HI! when mine came up on my e46 , it was the gear position switch . problem solved by changing that little switch that gave big problem...it's just wear and tear..just time to change it.. when it initially came on , the symptoms were EXACTLY like yours, i could reset it by just switching off the engine and restart again..then after a while it wont reset and I cant change gears..cant move & no indication of which gear it's on-..blank..if it happens while driving, it will be stuck in one gear..gear indication blank..it's in emergency mode just to make it driveable at slow pace to make it to destination or workshop :D ..it's written in the manual .. so , with about RM400 problem solved.good as new..

Hmm. I'm driving a E36, so dunno it's the same. But it happened to me before. The light in layman terms means that your car has switched to a "safe mode" for the transmission. It locks in the 3rd or 4th gear to eleminate the need to shift the gears. Sometimes it is a sign of excessive wear and tear due to mileage or running long durations without changing the oil. For me, it was just time i suppose. Had it overhauled. My mate however regularly changes his oil but hit a problem when the wrong lubs were used on his ZF.
Oh well. Just my 2 cents.

a pretty similar problem arised from one of my colleague's car..
sent to MSpeed, to diagnose, changed the stall speed sensor, and the problem still persisted; BUT if the aircond is switched off, the car is perfectly fine..no transmission error appeared on the dash..
then tried to change the electronic board, and it still persist..

what could it be? the ATF was changed before, somewhere in the middle of last year

Hi Nazrie,

Thanks for the invite to your workshop! Its so cool to make money through your hobby.

Before reading your post (and trust me, it has been a long time since I last logged in), I have changed the battery and the problem still persist. I was in KL last week and didn't use my car for at least 5 days. When I came back, this problem didn't occur on day one but the following day it was back to haunt me!!! Hence, decided to change the battery to see how. Anyway, the old battery had served me for 4 years already and I thought might as well change it.

I will be back to KL on the 24th up to the 26th. Perhaps I can meet you so that we could solve this problems once and for all. Referring to your earlier post you were mentioning about a switch that needs to be replaced due to wear and tear. I really hope so.

I recently spoke to Ah Meng and he checked around and told me that it is confirmed that the transmission control module needs to be changed. Apprently, he spoke to other mechanics and they confirmed that through their experience. That will cost me at least RM 1000 to change the control module.

Bro, PM me your number and I will call you to make arrangements when I come down to KL. Am baed in Penang at the moment.

Taggnas,

The group of guys that nazrie mentioned are very passionate and highly rated mechanics and technicians. They just love their jobs. The only thing is that they only work on weekends. Some people might get the wrong impression because sometimes it could be a little time consuming. That's why he doesn't promote this place to everybody. Please be aware that most of the time BMW will always be the cheapest car in the workshop. The rest are Porsches, Lambos, Ferraris and Bentleys.

Yep! I got his PM with his contact details already. Will surely pay them a visit (and of course check out the other cars there) when I pay them a visit when I am back in KL. Thanks, man!
