BM Zhai I have tried to push my car to 200km/h. But I find it next to impossible maybe there is something wrong with my car. I will try it again on my way back this Friday!! :D
kat,

dun think there's anything 'wrong' with your car la...

guess that's the max that it'll go on 18"s.....

Agreed once a while push the car to top is good to ensure the can can still run to top spped, if not it will not run. All udm are protected on the rev and u will never over rev the engine so why worried just trash it. Even 1st gear on steptronic it will chnage to second when u reach the max rev 5800rpm.

Huh? This is the first time I've heard of a 160km/h top speed for ANY BMW... also, I've never heard of a case like wglee's! Anyone else got any experience of a situation like that???

My friend used to have this car (sorry, I can't reveal the marque) which she pampered very much - the car was hardly driven and then only very gently and at the legal limit at all times. The car was also largely driven only in urban areas. When I drove her car one day, I was shocked that it could not exceed 110km/h!!

Perhaps the conclusion that can be drawn from my friend's experience is this: Don't pamper the car too much. Every now and then, it's good to exercise the car by giving it a good high speed thrashing on the highway; this will blow away the cobwebs (or should I say clear the car's lungs and bowels) and perhaps will help the car to consistently achieve its manufacturer-quoted top speed which, in the case of the E46 318i 1.9, should be in the region of 200km/h.

Hell, even my family runabout, a lowly Proton Iswara 1.3, can hit 160km/h! And, yes, I "cane" that car quite often; which is probably why it is so healthy!
alfa say alfa la.... or is it audi? :D

The fastest I ever took an E36 318i was 200 kmh with a front passenger and no air-con on 17" BUT I needed ALL the road I could get on the Seremban-PD stretch. I think the E46 318i (1.9L) should have less hassle achieving that, heh!.

Fastest I have been in an E36 318i was 190kmh. Driver, 2 passengers, running 15" rims and with aircon on. Driven by an ex-colleague on the way to East Coast using the trunk road. Needed quite a long stretch of road to attain that speed (after Karak town and once more after Gambang) and for a short period of time only. After that, gotta brake for a corner. :D

Got proof somemore.... kena saman. :D

Mine 17" wheels doin 230km/h and still haven floor coz i dont dare .... oopss mine is 325 .... so sorry guys ... :D

So, in conclusion, looks like yes, there is something wrong w this particular e46 318.

Best to get that car checked out by a competent mech.

It was a 1985 model, I think, with 5 speed manual transmission.
Top speed was only achievable on 4th gear. 5th gear was a fully "economy" gear. Cannot even maintain constant speed on a slight gradient. Always gotta downchange while going up a slight gradient.

Dude !!!
That is Human error OR Mechanical error :D
if 180km/hr it's normal la :D

agreed that bimmers need to be spanked once in a while to clean up its lungs..the car will adapt to whatever style of driving too so if u drive like a laggard, that's the way it'll react to you too.
..can't expect much from a 1.9l 4 to pull the e46's heavy body though..160kph is rather pathetic though.so sad..

Could be true becos when I first got my SLOTH, I too find it difficult to hit 160kmh. After a few months of hard driving, I can now easily touch 180kmh but that is my limit for now.... do not want to over-extend the engine in its present state.
