Dear Sifus,I am facing where I quite frequently having to top up engin oil, every 2 weeks about 1/2 or more liter to maintain half point. FI, all leakage done and no more leaking. Guess need to do top overhaul that was advise.Question: I was told it's around RM2K, it that so? What actually they change? (did not get the time to ask the mechanic)Anyone know, pls advise. Thanks

im also having the same problem. even using fully synthetic also giving the same result. i asked some bimmer, and they said its just normal.

hmmm guess it should not be la.......
to the sifus, any idea, should a top up of engine oil every 2 weeks for about 1 liter is norm?

tx

have you tried using heavier engine oil?
i used to take 5w castrol edge and need to topup the oil once a while. changed to 10w, problem solved.
maybe mine is diff case, but no harm trying if you havent!

Im not any sifu here but it was definitely something wrong to your car. Sent your car to check with the competent BMW workshop.

Had the same issue with my N42 2.0l E46 few years ago. However, after changing to Total 10w-50, the makan minyak hitam issue was minimized tremendously.

That aside, I think RM2k quoted by your mechanic for a top overhaul is a bargain if it can indeed cure your ride's makan engine oil issue while maintaining using 5W eng oils.

Take it to a reliable mech. A top overhaul will cost you more than 2K. Once you open up the head, all the related oil seals and gaskets have to be changed. A pressure test has to be done to the cylinder head for cracks. If none then you are quite save. If otherwise, you need to get a second hand cylinder head. This will cost you. That is why I suggest you take it to a specialist that will not do an experiment on your car..

cheers

Thank you people, I am using 5W at the moment and will try out the 10W as recommended and see what's coming over the weeks. Hope this works.

SBB, any lost of power, white smoke at the exhaust.

when you say every 2 weeks you need to top up 1 litre - can you inform what was the mileage travel in 2 weeks.

Engine oil evaporating

Hi, there bro.

Suggest that u either think of selling the car fast to someone unlucky. If u willing to keep , its either u need an engine full overhaul with changing parts or get a second hand engine.

Same faith happen to my e46 318i 2.0 year 2002. I made a decision to keep it so i had to bear with all the repairs. My e46 needed top up every other week at least for every 500 km run it needed half a liter engine oil.

My mechanic dismantle my engine and found engine filled with bloody sludge and everything in there was gone. Got a 2003 engine for about 7 k and added a bit for top overhaul and new timing chain. Now touch wood no need to top up already.

U can contact my mechanic at pandan indah ..... wp auto.... good in handling BMW . He is a specialist.... Name in Albert Pang ... Phone number : 0122017792. Mention my name he sure will do the best for u, bro.

Good luck .... trust me .... he will make ur car good as new and u wont regret it.

Hi, actually what is the suitable engine oil for E46 328i? 5w/40 or 10w/50? please advise, TQ

hi SBB, i'm not sure if this applies to bmw or not because i saw it done on a jap car. if the oil and water do not mix, which means head gasket is still fine, just change the valve stem seal. i know this mechanic who did this without removing the cyl head. he has some sort of a special tool that when the valve collet and spring is removed, the valve won't drop into the combustion chamber.
