as for the RM2K challenge:
ASSUMING you have a non-stock HU.

A simple 4 channel amp (B-52/Kenwood/Sony Xplod) - sub RM1K
Front speaker components - RM500 :D (Sony Xplod / Kenwood / JVC / Clarion / Pioneer / Alpine lowest end??)
Subwoofer - Armadillo in a box (RM500++, can be found at KF Audio, pretty decent for its price).
Wiring - I think some fellow members can give you free. :D
Tuning / install - beg the installer for FOC. Cuci pinggan / wax installers' ass if you have to.

That should keep you within the RM2K budget

Saya sudah, Schone sudah, WJ sudah, and now Affan pun sudah...Van mana?

van tgh bertapa kat gunung ledang. Gathering all the info for a major poison. I'd stay far far away from this one. It might affect us too. :D

Sorry la ...

My poison has lost its sting among the elated gurus here. Anyway, Kev ... I think the guys here have given you some very sound ( pun intended ) advice and you cud hardly go wrong. I wud however say that the circa RM2K budget can yield some very interesting results. More on that later ...

Music among other things in life is very personal. I cud spend hours listening to a bunch Cuban old men ( BVSC, la ) strumming away while your idea of musical bliss is probably to wind down to sweet Silje Neergaard. The golden rule in ICE as always is to let your ears be the judge. You're on the right track as far as I see it .. you have accepted the fact that hardware is only one half of the equation ... the other is obviously the Black Art of set-up and tuning that so many of our local shops lack these days .... :lazy:

A 2K budget can be maximised once you know what can be achieved with it ... obviously pre-owned gears will give you maximum bang for the bucks but choosing/matching them carefully is another ball game. Match a pair of bright natured speakers like Focals to bring thinny sounding amps and your ears will start bleeding after just half an hour of serious listening. Or, take warm sounding speakers like PHDs and pair them off with similar sounding amps from Audison or Genesis and you'll get ear diabetics in no time.

Just 2 weeks ago, a lady pall of mine came with a task of trying to achieve some decent music in her new car. The stock system was junk as far she's concerned but she did not want to spend any more than RM2K -/+ to get where she wanted to go. I listed down the kinda of expectations that she had of this new system ( almost similar to your requirements too ) and proceeded to allocate the funds as it was given. We decided that some decent pre-owned hardware were the best choice for the job and proceeded to raid on some SIN friends and the usual ICE forums to unearth some bargains. This is what I managed to turn up for here after a week of hardwork ...

HU - a good cond. 3 1/2 year old Naka CD-45Z CD player. Suits her taste of simple SQ unit minus the bling and hi tech stuff. Recently serviced by the first owner = peace of mind for just - SGD 160.00

Amp - 4 channel Audison SRX4 - a 1 1/2 year old entry level Italian amp. Rated power at 60W x 4 or 190W x 2 after bridged .... Great bargain at SGD 180.00 from a fellow IASCA competitor. The amp will have its channel 1 & 2 driving the front speakers while channel 3 & 4 will be bridged for sub duty.

Front speakers - Helix HX series components. 5.25 inch matched component set with silk dome tweeters and x-overs. About 2 years old but installed in a 2nd car. Paid just SGD 140.00 after some hard negotiation.

Sub - a single Rockford Punch HE in a small 0.85 cft sealed box. Almost 2 years old but still pounds nicely. SGD 120.00 for the whole lot.

Damage so far is SGD 600.00 or about RM 1340.00 after exchange rates. She spent another RM 500.00 on the actual install - decent RCA, power and speaker cables plus fuse and labour. The whole thing cost her just a shade under RM 1850.00 with some extra cash left to buy some decent CDs to do justice to her system.

I'm sharing these with you and the rest mainly just to remind you guys that bargains are always there and once you've decided on the kinda set up you want and the bearing your music taste, go out there and knock on a few doors. Once the hardwares are all in hand, find a good installer who has firm fundamentals of car audio and will set the system up to YOUR taste and preference ... not someone who's main idea is to get the job done as quickly as he can and hope to never see you again.

Enough rambling for now .... do let me know if there's anything that I can do for you ...

Cheers,

:)

Ah Lian,

Still not as good as some of my hard-core friends of mine. One fella spent an entire weekend being nice to an old man who had a mint ol Phoenix Gold M50 amp in his store gathering dust and yet did not want to sell it. He did everyting to convince the old man to sell it to him and promised to look after it. In end, SGD 180.00 and helping him to water his plants for 2 weekends did the trick. Hard-core bugger !!! But I'd do the same for another M50 or the M44 if I can nail one.

hardcore indeed!

i had retired from the ice scene for quite a while... but some of these posts have really made my fingers itchy to visit all those vice places where the poisons flow... adoiiii....

was almost contemplating selling my ice... but now.... aih... maybe i'll keep them for the next car.... eheheheh... sell kennot get much, wanna buy back susah... :)

thanks for the booster shot! B)

buying 2nd hand stuff is good to save costs. However, if you get a f-up installer, you may end up paying more as they screw up the install or burn the goods. :( They might even charge extra $$ for tuning and installs.

Van, your racun not strong enough la. Disappointed with you. Hehe..

BTW, what Van has recommended are good stuff to start with if you can get hold of those things before somebody else does.

Rayavalli kot............all the festivities must have made him go soft and mushy on us. Van snap out of it.

Getting used is dodgy. A friend once bought what he was told was a "owner upgraded immediately after purchase head unit" turned out to be a repaired unit.

Van,

Thanks for your input and advice. I agree that ICE is very subjective to individuals needs and thank you for illustrating that it IS possible to have a decent set-up for RM2k. It also drive home to point that one who choses to take the 'plunge' must do extensive homework and become familiar with the character/characteristics of associated hardware and some basic knowledge on wiring and tuning. Knowing where to hunt for deals also helps.

Thanks buddy!

This is my set up. Nice sound for cabin only la!!!! No boom boom for public ears .

1. Sony black panel HU - High End one ( The one with the motorised opening)
2. Prestige Sub Woofer 12inch w/ Custom Box
3. Rockford Low Pass for Sub
4. Stock BMW nokia Speakers powered by HU
5. b52 2ch 150W + 150W RMS Amp.

Sound is decent .

Budget - 1 1/2 yrs ago approx at 2.2K - HU 2nd hand and amp 2nd hand .

cheers :D

kevster30 - yes.. you CAN do ICE for RM2k...

- find a simple installer who is willing to spend time
- buy lower cost components and tune like hell!!

When I first picked up my car from Teh-ni-chi after a few grand of installation... it sounded BAAAAAAAD.... but they assured me it wasn't tuned yet but after an hour or so of tuning based on my live feedback.. it was sweet! IMportant bit was having the tuning points.

My first foray into ICE was a no-name 2ch amp for RM250 and a sub (RM300) and a enclosure (RM250) - I spent many hours trying to tune it but to no avail - it still sounded like crap.

I think my failure then was
- weak amp
- poor tuning points ( no cross over, low pass / high pass) : this led to awful pollution of sound from all points

At the barest minimum.. I would suggest the following and my cheap cheap budget

- a 4ch electronic cross over (RM800)
- one 10" sub with enclosure (RM600)
- one 4ch amp (RM500-600 can buy cheap cheap - use taiwanese brand .. they are decent.. seriously)

Set up :
- HU ==> into xover ==> amp
- front speakers ==> 2ch on amp
- sub ==> bridge 2ch on amp
- rear speakers - either remove, or plug in some resistors to soften it to bare minimal - drive from head unit

Tuning points (you can tune yourself)
- x-ver (high pass for front speakers, low pass for the sub
- ampl level on 4ch amp to control balance between front speakers and sub

I seriously this will give you the working platform to tune.

hi kevster30! if ur budget is at 2k, it is more than enough to hav a good decent sound system. can go for not so branded or midrange set.
it is only a car for you to listen to ur favorites while driving. it is better to spend a good system at home rather than a car, unless you r fully loaded!
wit good system, must always make sure where u park ur car, mine got stolen twice at off and home! with or without super alarm, make no different to a thief! better to save the extras for emergency!
just my 2 sen! :eek:k: retired from ice after 2 little devil come into my life!

Aiyah ...

Not so la ...... :)

The big guy has already set a budget in mind and it wud be unfair for us to line up 5 figure poison for him cos it's not what he wants anyway. Just trying to help him to find his piece of sonic nirvana at a budget that won't break his piggy bank. It's kinda funny that a lot folks in general have this perception that you need to spend big bucks to gain some decent sound quality ... probably the shops are partially to be blamed for this too. We'd like to get more people to bite the ICE bullet and sharing our experiences and tips / suggestions is a good way to do it, kan ? :p Of course if Abang kev had said - " I have a budget of RM 20K for an SQ system ... please provide me with some tips / suggestions and etc " ... this whole thread wud have gone the other way ... for sure !!!! :nyehehe:

A basic set-up with decent gears and tuned rite will blow a complicated multi amp / multi cross-over and EQ laden set up that has not been optimised on any given day. As my sifu used to say ... sometimes in ICE, more is not necessarily better and big brands does not guarantee you sonic nirvana. I remember the previous IASCA finals in KL when a Proton Wira laden with Pegasus gears took the winner's trophy home in the SQ category beatting a SIN car with MB Quart speakers, Audison VRX amps and ID Max sub as well as the Team DLS from Thailand. The proof as always is in listening.

Kev ... glad to be of help. Enjoy your sonic journey and do let us know if there's anything we can help you with.

Van,

Thanks again.......you the man! Ladies and germs.....the ICE guru has spoken........*bowing in awe*

the problem is that in MY, goods are taxed heavily so it is quite impossible to get decent (not even hi-end) stuff for RM2K. Forget about getting the stuff in SG or second hand.

Kev, since you said RM2K, so be it. Next time don't complain. Hehehe.. I told you already, stay away if possible because once you are in, you are IN big time because obviously your ears knows what it wants. :D
